DescriptionOk so bear with me during story time because this piece earns it at the top of my list of ultimate grails…Most of my friends know that Incredible Hulk #383 was my gateway drug into comics. While i had occasionally read single issues prior to this, THIS was the issue that made me keep coming back to the well for 30+ years now. I STILL have the original well-worn book with me (see additional pics!) that I bought at Dubai airport on my way back to Sri Lanka for summer vacation. I just remember that feeling of “how is the Hulk this smart?!” And “what the heck happens next???” Over the 2+ months I spent in Sri Lanka that summer, all I could do was hope there would be a copy of the next issues at the airport waiting on me. In the meantime, I read and re-read every page, pored over the art and words for months. I learned that Peter David was the writer and Dale Keown the penciller (and eventually that Mark Farmer was the inker). That 5 hour return flight back to Dubai was torture. As luck would have it, the next couple of issues WERE available when I returned and I never looked back. I can’t describe this page as a dream come true because that 11-year old kid living overseas never dreamed that big. For that matter, neither did this 42-year old dude. Hopefully the sheer resonance of owning this page shines through :) Social/Sharing |

There is seriously nothing better as an OA collector than to get an original from the issue that sparked your love of comic books. Huge congrats to you!

Well, the art is certainly in better condition than the comic! Very glad you did not have the art too when you were young. Its all about nostlagia when you get down to it. Owning something that made an impact on you is what it should all be about. Congraulations.

Ha! Thanks, Peter! Personally, it makes my heart happy when i see tattered comics...it means someone read them for love and not for a 9.8 :) But agreed it's a good thing I didn't have the OA at 11 :)

Nothing better with this stuff than to get a great piece of art that's super meaningful from when you were a kid - definitely the "grail' definition. Not hard to see why this book was the gateway - great story, great art, lots of cameos and a main baddie in the Abomination. Here, love that downward perspective choice at the top, and wasn't it cool and weird at the same time to the see the HULK with a smiling expression like that?! HUGE congrats, my friend!

Yup! And leapt directly in to the Infinty Gaunlet...so many WTF moments!

The romance and how it began. Nora Ephron couldn't have scripted a better, When Eranga Met Hulk. The forlorn longing and time spent from your passions made you realize this was going to last. Last longer than the six minutes Hulk is famous for.

LMAO that's a pretty apt comparison. Pretty sure Hulk was (has been?) famous for more than 6 minutes though :)

I'm so glad this page made it's way to you after all these years my friend! So cool you still have your original, well loved copy of the comic and love that it features some high level Keown art. I especially love the perspective and shadows in that top panel. Are there some tones in there too?

Thanks, brother! Yes and well spotted on the tones! They're strategically and some almost impossibly small. Farmer would get credit for that, right?

A great story that may even be almost as good as the page itself! Not only have you scored a page from an issue that has so much meaning for you, but it's an incredible page to boot! Fantastic overhead view. Congratulations, man! Oh, and yes, those special effects are created by sticking on zip-a-tone, and yes, it's the inker that does that.

Very kind, Ruben...thank you! I'm familiar with the screen tones but the ones I've seen and own are both pencilled and inked by a single artist. Should've known the inker would ultimately take charge of that which is another reason to appreciate them. Thanks for confirming, though!

Just a sublime page from a great run and one of the most original in terms of camera angle. Truly memorable.
It's great that it means so much to you. I think many of us, as children, have experienced that obsessive compulsion to get more once we dipped our toe in comics.

Thanks, bud! And you're so right. That high we experienced as kids following the bread crumbs from comic to comic is something we're trying to recreate now in other ways - be it OA, commissions, toys etc.

Thanks, Stephen! I feel like Dale is such a monster artist but doesn't seem to get the same amount of love from modern buyers/readers that some of the other 90's (Image) artists do.

That's the right page to get from the issue, and what a great issue it was. Love the page (must admit a little green with envy) and the story and pics as well. Makes a great bookend with your commission. Congrats E - thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Dave! I absolutely LOVE your collection of Hulk art (that 396 page!!) so this means a lot to me. Next up is probably trying to track down a good Gary Frank example like your 407 page!

Just a great overhead shot. Really the perfect way to convey the size and scale of the character in relation to everyone (and everything) else. Don't think you could have found a better page from your dream book. Congrats!

Fantastic Incredible Hulk page! I loved Mark Farmer's inks over Dale Keown! Especially enjoy that huge splash with the downward angle on the massive Hulk. And that final close-up of the Hulk's face is pure gold!
