Description

When reaching out to Brian Ching for my Alpha-17 commission (see the other artwork I posted), I told him about my love for the Dark Horse Star Wars era, "Star Wars: Republic" and especially the Jabiim arc he drew.

It's the first time that the "war" in "Star Wars" was so well established and tangible. Jedi Padawans lost their masters; Obi-Wan almost died; and the Republic lost ground, battle after battle. There were no good guys, bad guys, winners or losers: everyone lost, and the native population of Jabiim the most. The amount of times I've read this arc and story cannot be counted on one hand.

Brian was nice enough to part with a page of my favorite Star Wars comic, featuring the 3 central characters of the story: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and ARC Trooper Alpha-17. The top panel is great, showing Obi-Wan in action while reflecting incoming blaster fire. Then we move over to Alpha beating a rebel; while Anakin & Obi-Wan are performing some Force action. Subtle but great, are the Clone Troopers in the background of the final panel.

This page perfectly sums up my Star Wars comic book childhood. Thank you for that, Brian.

Great page from one of the stand out series of the Dark Horse era of Star Wars comics (or I guess now we'll be saying the first Dark Horse era of Star Wars comics with their return next year). A lot of fantastic artists worked on that series, but I feel Ching and Duursema set the bar, and are the artists for the story arcs I most remember from across those 80+ issues before the shift to Star Wars: Dark Times. Stellar pick up!

Thanks, Jeffrey! I wholeheartedly agree. Dark Horse's Star Wars has a special place in my heart - thanks to so many amazing writers and artists.

Rare to see boots on the ground gritty warfare with the Jedi.  Fighting in the trenches is eleganct for a more civilized age.

I think that's what mesmerized me when I read these comics when growing up. It gets even crazier when Anakin starts Force choking rebels near the end of this story. The Jedi really were fish out of water in the whole Clone Wars conflict, and them suddenly being generals.

Really great page depicting the brutality of trench warfare that is hardly ever seen in the Star Wars universe where most of the battles are fought in the cockpit of a starfighter. I remember reading the Jabiim arc and thinking how grim it was. Every battle won was a Pyrrhic victory that made you question if the lives lost to gain that next hill was truly worth it. In the end there turns out to be no victor and both sides lost.

My feelings exactly, Christopher! Thanks for the comment and checking out this page! :)
