DescriptionTitle Splash page from 1977 that is essentially a 'second cover' that displays the battle that is about to take place between Richard Dragon and The Axeman! What drew me to this page was that it featured a full-figure image of the title character (one of my favorites) and that (for the most part - boots instead of slippers) he is in (what I consider) his definitive costume. Also, I prefer when Ric Estrada inks himself in this title, rather than the inkers they would typically assign him on other issues. When inking himself, the imagery reminds me more of Alex Toth, rather than Vinnie Colletta. :) Page purchased from ArtEFumetto. Description from previous Heritage Auction: "When Janey is killed by the Axeman, Richard and Ben search for the man responsible. Created in ink over graphite on DC Bristol board with image areas of 10" x 15." The page is signed by Estrada. There is tape residue along some of the borders, some areas of toning, marginal production notes, and correction marks in whiteout and blue pencil. The first page has stat paste-ups for the title, indicia, credits and text. In overall Very Good condition. " Social/Sharing |

I feel like Estrada is one of those unsung heroes of 1970s DC who produced fantastic art but doesn't get his due because of his journeyman status. I suppose his longest stints were on DC's war comics, but they don't get much attention these days despite the high quality of many of those stories. This splash is excellent, and I think that if Estrada had done a long run on a super-hero title, he'd be remembered in the same breath as the likes of Aparo, Grell and Staton.

Love that hatchwork on the dude in the background! Super impressive that in between episodes of ChiPs, Estrada found time to flex those artistic muscles...

Don't know why it's better to fight on the high seas. Don't axe, don't tell.
