Description

It is difficult to explain how surprised and delighted I was when Gilberto Ugolini wrote me and told me he would like to donate one of his paintings for me! It was completely out of my imagination that somebody would appreciate that much my old study, Carl Barks' Surviving Comic Book Art.
And now it is needed to put into the context, please check/google with other artists who have made remakes of Carl Barks' Disney Duck oil paintings, I dare to say Gilberto has made the best ones! They are 1:1 with Barks' Duck oils, only sometimes tones of colors are a bit different, but so well done that even other artists have copy-pasted his paintings among Barks' paintings, stating the artwork done by Barks! ;-)  You can check Gilberto's artwork from here: http://www.gil313.com/

So, then I was thinking how to frame it and decided that of course IŽll try to make as close as possible, time period original framing, like using fabric coating for the inner frame. An Additional extra was that brass plate where I used Carl Barks' own font, thanks to laser graving this is now possible (not when Barks' framed his own artwork).

The timing of this was also perfect, I got the artwork from a frame shop few days after I shipped my last copy of my book. That project took 27.5 years to sell and donate 1000 copies (ok, 2 pcs I left for myself).
Gilberto's lovely present was the best thing that could have happened, I feel the idea came directly from his heart, I wouldn't had any dreams or imagination that somebody would appreciate this much my old book. When I got the painting (16" x 20", 115 hours labor of love needed to paint it!) from the frame shop at the same time when the last book was sent, I was feeling I have done something good.
However, I still hope this book would inspire others to study and publish similar studies from other great comic book artists.

Beautiful recreation painting...congrats Matti!!! And may I say Thank You again!!! Your book has inspired many of today's Barks collectors, to follow this wonderful road. I myself bought it around 1995 from my local comic book shop and it has been my guide and inspiration ever since... :-))

Thanks a lot Monty for your kind words! :-) I am very happy if my study has been an inspiration for you :-) Well, it has also inspired you to make bids on the items I would like to have in my collection!! ;-)) But I guess we both are pretty happy about the artworks we have managed to get. I am also thanking you for opening my eyes for many other great artists, like Alex Raymond, without seeing the originals in nature I would have never started thinking of buying them... so, your magnificent collection has inspired me a lot, and sometimes I have bid against you... ;-) BTW, you should have no more copies of my old book! ;-)

Immensely enjoyable that orchestrates memories of Bark's mellifluous colors that engrandizes the humor and charm that Barks put forth.  This assures with a smile that it's alright to pay tribute with art that hold that same spirit.
