Description

This is page 11 from the story "Birthday Party," published in Pines' "Little Angel" #10 in 1957. Attributed to Mike Roy and Mike Peppe, the scribbled signature matches that on pages Heritage assigns to the team, so I'm going with it. "Little Angel" didn't have much to distinguish it from other bratty kid comics, but the art was a cut above. I bought this page very cheaply on ebay in 2002 and have picked up a few more from the series when they became available. Roy & Peppe (if it was them) had a strong sense of cartoon form and composition, a kind of angular 1950s-style, a little distinct from most other funny kid styles that I know of, and lots of fun stuff to look at in a page. I particularly like panel 4, where they drop the border and rely on silhouette and sound effect... the simplified angular profile in the last panel and that odd, horizontal panel-within-a-panel that frames Little Angel ... the more detailed grouping of kid figures bunched up in the bottom of panel 1.

You can tell they were having fun to use all these techniques to tell the story on a page that doesn't rely on the cuteness of the kids much.
