Description

I'm as fond of the "Reckless" books as I am of Phillips and Brubaker's amazing "Criminal" series, and Destroy All Monsters is my favorite Reckless volume so far. Among other things, this story focuses on the relationship between Ethan and Anna, his partner in investigation & revenge, and it includes Anna's origin story.

What's worse than having your theater on fire and your partner in danger? A crowbar chaser. I really enjoy pages depicting the hero in jeopardy, and I think this qualifies. Love the look of this page, too --- Ethan's features "overexposed" due to the blinding fire, lots of atmospherics from the heat and smoke, great storytelling all around, but especially the gaze reversal of our hero from the penultimate to final panels as he's smacked. Despite the movement, that gloved hand in the final shot is more clear and solid than anything else on the page. Phillips's mastery of continuity is as good as Brubaker's writing, which is about as good as it gets IMO.

Thanks for taking a look!

Really nice page. I like how, even though his figures are more comic booky than realistic, his lovely sense of shadowplay gives his work an overall realistic look and feel. That expert use of shadow and light is precisely why I always include Phillips when I say I love the work of artists who employ this type of realistic, shadow heavy approach, including Michael Lark, Steve Epting, Butch Guice and Mike Perkins. Fun fact: Brubaker actually asked Perkins to work on some of his creator owned projects, which would've been great to see and read, but Perkins has been an exclusive artist for the past 20 years or so and therefore couldn't do it.

I'd love to see a Perkins/Brubaker joint!  Like you, I really enjoy work by Lark, Epting, and Guice as well.  Brubaker has said, and I totally believe it, that he couldn't do nearly as much as he does without Phillips because in addition to being a great artist, Phillips is *fast*.  I don't know much about Perkins's process or pace, as I've only gotten into his stuff after seeing it in your and Mikail's CAF galleries over the past year --- is he quick?  My absolute fav modern comic artists are ridiculously fast:  Daniel Warren Johnson & Sean Gordon Murphy can each crank out a fully penciled and inked page (for a kick-ass story that they themselves wrote in a week) in a single day.  Unreal.  BTW, a great (IMO) recent non-superhero book by Brubaker involving a different artist is "Friday" with Marcos Martín.

In the current generation of comic artists, anyone who can both pencil and ink on a page per day schedule over the long term (meaning, no 1 month break needed every few issues), is considered fast. Yes, that is Perkins' pace as well.

What I LOVE about any book put out by Phillips and Brubaker is that they're absolutely soaked in atmosphere - and I mean every page in every book. This one is no exception! Great pickup, man!
