I would never have heard of the Toodles if I wasn't collecting obscure and inexpensive original comic art -- and I still havent come upon any references to it in popular culture. I bought this from a collector in L.A. about 20 years ago, and was immediately entranced by the beautiful brush work of artist Rod Ruth. The Toodles was created by a married couple, the Baers, in 1941, and Ruth was the hired-hand artist. It ran until 1961.

I've gathered more examples over the years, and gotten a sense that strip was sort of all over the place -- family /romantic melodrama, kid humor/adventure. But as long as Ruth drew it, it looked wonderful (he left toward the end of the run), creating beautiful texture and delicate linework, care with details, with expressive characters and energetic story-telling. An under-appreciated artist in my opinion - just look at the detail of panel 2 in additional images, down to the way Ruth used white-out on the individual "steam lines" from the coffee through the heavy curve of the old man's shoulder..!
