Description

Does the Forbush Man have what it takes to join Cyclomps, Angel-Face, Beastly, Marble Girl, and Icy-Man, The Uncandied Echhs-Men? Can Magneat-O and Toadstool thwart our pot-wearing, ersatz hero? Can I think of another question that fits well here? Probably not on all fronts! Welcome to Not Brand Echh, Marvel’s response to Mad parody, and the question, “Does a comic book have to be any good?” Here we have the eponymous group from the title, and the Forbush man, Marvel’s least illustrious super-hero, who’s thinking about joining the team. Hijinks ensue.

One of the big overlaps of me and my Dad’s collections were EC parody/horror and Not Brand Echh. Irreverent titles for irreverent people. Sometimes, it’s refreshing to get a pie in the face rather than a Massive Uppercut, you know? Not Brand Echh fit us both perfectly, with its John Davis-esque stylings and meta parody. We’d grab an issue, and chuckle at the Human Scorch fighting the Sunk-Mariner, or the Black Panter tussling with Dang. It was only 13 issues, but we enjoyed them all.

My favorite artists from the run were Marie Severin and Tom Sutton, and I really wanted to get a Forbush Man page, so I was happy to get this great gag page as a gift. Thanks, Dad.

Icy-man was younger than Marble-girl when they joined the Ecchs-men. I'm just saying...

I never read them, but I used to love flipping through this series via the back issue bins at my shop when I was a kid. What a great page you scored, too, featuring an X-Men with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutans parody, plus the all important Forbush Man appearance! Sutton ability to adapt his style to humor comics was so fabulous! Best of all is the great way in which comics always connected you with your dad. I envy you for that. Congrats, man!

Yeah, as you alluded to, and Fred said, Sutton was kind of an unheralded master. So willing to go along to get along, and be a Bullpen Guy, so he didn't seem to get his fair opportunity to shine. And he really was so good at adapting to humor. It is nice to be able to share stuff like this with my dad. :) Thanks, Rubén!

Sutton is such an overlooked master.

This is a GREAT example of his cartooning, congrats.

Tom Sutton was so versitile and worked well in the Brand Echh style.  It is always so fun to see the little jokes sprinkled around on this pages, and this one doesn't disappoint in that department.  Nice pick-up!

I don't get it, parodying as a form of making commentary is just weird.

Hahaha, what a fun read!  Marble Girl.  Cyclomps.  Angel-Face crazily singing Sinatra.  Groaner pot/pan puns.  "Suddenly there aren't enough panels for anything to happen slowly."   Lots to enjoy here.  And from 1968!  Very very cool!!

Dad joke puns are the best, aren't they? That's the lifeblood of this series. Cyclomps is my favorite name. Heh. Thanks, Paul

Brilliant, J.  A friend of mine actually got one of those "whole box of comics for a quarter" that had about 100 Silver Age Marvels in it (this was in 1979 or 1980...?) and he very generously split them with me.  A huge run of FF, Amazing Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Daredevil... and my favorites of all of them, bar none, were the 'Not Brand Ecch!'s.  I absolutely loved the unmitigated gall of declaring your line of comics so important that they were worthy of parody a few months after they were published (because, y'know, EVERYONE has read them and knows enough about them for the jokes to work).  Having a page from this run is super special and (like many other gorgeous examples in your awesome collection) elicits a "someday!" sigh and a spot on my hope chest.  SUCH a great page (a Forbush Man page?!!?  YOWZA!), and the fact that it was a gift from your dad is non-stop awesome.  Mega congrats, J!  A treasure!

Oh, that's such an excellent point on the ability to parody immediately because they were the hotness at the time. Gall, indeed! Thanks for the great comment, Jason, and everyone else, too. It's nice to be joined in my love for this goofy old comic. :)

Oh, how I loved this comic when I got it as a back issue via mail order from Mile High Comics as a kid in the 1980s.  This is easily my favorite piece posted to CAF this month.

Thank you! Man, I remember ordering back issues from catalogs. It might've taken a lot longer than nowadays, but we had so many cool avenues to cheap back issues. Ah, the good old days.

Very cool! Wolveroach and Peter Porker: the Spectacular Spider-Ham would have certainly made the team ;)

Even cooler that it brings back those great memories!

Sutton's parody style leans harder into Wally Wood more than Jack Davis, I think. Regardless, it's fun to see these pages as, a few Jack Kirby stories reprinted in FF collections aside, I've never delved much into NBE. (Something I should probably rectify at some stage.) Cheers!

I can definitely see Wood there, too. I was actually talking more about the overall parody stylings of NBE, but I can see the mash-up of their two parody stylings. They were both so gag heavy and frenetic fun. Thanks for the great comment!

Always loved the over-the-top frenetic energy of Not Brand Echh (and Inferior Five) but had no idea Sutton was a contributor as this isn't the style you normally associate with him.  Some quick research shows this is among his earliest work ... and he was regular on NBE - live and learn.  Great page!

Wow! Not Brand Echh! was one of the delights of my childhood comic reading! This is a terrific page from the series with beautiful send-ups by the talented Tom Sutton, and most importantly, an appearance by the Forbush Man! Fantastic addition to your collection!

SO many gags, man, love it.  I never read this series but I gotta get to it!  "Six month active duty clause" lol!  And yes, let's get moving - only 4 pages left!  Clearly this hits OA and nostalgia hard for you, J - big congrats!

Fantastic memories here for me JH ! Loved reading these as a kid, the bulk,sunk- mariner, the mighty sore and so on,lol. To a 12 year old kid these used to crack me up as I drank my coke and ate potato chips while reading comics !!!

I am not at all familiar with this so was a bit confused by the Panavision & Cinerama glasses. ;-) Regardless, tons of bang for your buck in each panel, with lots of satiric banter to boot!

Heh. Old brands for old people like myself. :) Some of the gags might have aged out of common knowledge, but it's mostly satiric fun, as you said. It's worth a read, if you come across some cheap copies. Thanks for the comment!

Sutton did some great work on Not Brand Echh. The depictions of 'Angel-Face' and 'Beastly' in the opening panel are superb. Along with the 'Toadstool', those characters really show off Sutton's fabulous inking. Nice page!
