DescriptionMy first post of 2022 is one of my favorite artists…My tattoo artist! Dave painted this Kirby Thing homage with acrylic and tattoo ink over canvas, and Aunt Petunia’s bashful, blue-eyed nephew has never looked better, imo.Early on in the pandemic, when tattoo shops were shut down for a bit, Dave decided to sell some of his art. This baby has hung above his work station since I started going to him, staring down at me as I sat in a chair getting poked with needles a few thousand times. I love the Thing, and especially his antics with the Yancy Street Gang. Kirby really was a genius, and this pin-up he drew of Ben in a full-blown Yancy Street Tantrum is one of my favorite images of him. The purchase was a no-brainer. It hangs happily above my desk, where I can imagine what the Yancy Streeters dump on Benjy’s head one second after this image. Whatta revoltin’ development! Dave does commissions, hilarious coloring book page reimaginings, the BEST comic tattoos (any tat, really), and has a really fun Instagram account. Excellent recreation! The artist gave some nice depth to the image.

What a cool piece! And I'm sure it would look even cooler on your bicep or calf :)

Good question. I don't know if he's inked this particular image--I don't think so--but I know he's done a lot of Kirby style tattoos. 4 on me. :) If he had his druthers, I'm pretty sure he'd only ink comic tattoos.

A fun piece for sure with a personal history to you, what more could you ask?

Looks awesome! It shows the strength of Kirby to create these pop art icons and images that reach into the consciousness of the general public.

Right on, J H - Epic add to start off 2022! A beautiful recreation that adds a smoother, more beautiful gradation of color vs the original, and the detailing on the lamppost is fantastic. Obviously a labor of love (including the frame customization!) that you ought to display just as proudly as Dave did! Mega-congrats on this beauty (and just as Andre said, I would be curious if he's ever inked this onto anyone)!

Thanks, Jason! 110% a labor of love. If you check out his Instagram, you'll get an idea of his addiction. He's one of us. :) The detail is even more impressive up close. He took his time, for sure. Oh, and I don't think he's done his specific image yet, but he's done a lot of great Kirby tats. Lots of comic artists, actually.

First off, congratulations on getting your first post of 2022 up on the board, Jason! This is REALLY well done. I'm not a big fan of pop art myself, but he has given this piece that flavour and dare I say, has even improved on the original? It's difficult to explain how exactly, but his own version just gives the image some oomph the original lacks. So fab!

Thank you, Rubén! And I totally agree with your assessment. Insanely enough, I actually do think he improved the image. Kirby is my absolute favorite, so it pains me to say that. ;) (flog, flog, scourge, self-berate) But when you compare the two, I think it's in the face. Dave changed it slightly, softening the Thing's expression, and getting more emotion in his eyes. Also, taking the color brighter, and using a dark background, makes it pop a little more, imo.

This is AWESOME! As a guy with a lot of tattoos and a lot of Thing art, this is easy to love. The dimensionality of the piece really takes it to another place when compared to the original.

Yeah man, so happy to see your first 2022 post! Especially one so big and bold with such great textures created by your talented tattoo artist! You've been leaving such great comments on other people's art (thank you so much, btw, your comments on my stuff always make me happy), so it's nice to return the favor. I agree, the Thing has never looked better, and I also love his antics with the Yancy Street gang. He's literally wrapped around a street post! Must be really fun having that hanging above your desk. Thanks for sharing!

Some meticulous work there! Total Kirby goodness with some Waugh flair :) The hues of orange look great, and you gotta dig the detail in terms of giving that spacing between the rocks. I said meticulous already, right? Congrats!

Any artist that draws the Thing is practically a hero. Imagine signing up for that many lines for just one character...in every issue? Yikes! I'll take The Vanisher. ;) Thanks, Kahlil!
