Description

Its been a few years since I last added a newspaper strip to my gallery and I've dearly missed this part of my collecting, as newspaper strip art satiates the desire I have to collect fabulous quality, vintage American illustration regardless of subject matter and with nostalgia being a complete non-factor in the equation.

As an admirer of James Montgomery Flagg & Charles Dana Gibson, two of the better early 20th century American illustrators, I was naturally drawn to Godwin's Rusty Riley when I first got interested in newspaper strip art over 20 years ago, due to the clear influence the two aforementioned illustrators had on Godwin. For those of you who don't delve outside the superhero realm, you might find it interesting to know that Godwin actually worked in the comics biz throughout the 1940s, even drawing Wonder Woman for a time.

The reason I love early examples of Rusty Riley like this one is because they still retain some of that Gibson and Flagg influence. However, Godwin would continue to develop his style while working on this strip and eventually refine it and make it his own.

I love this particular example because aside from showing clear Gibson & Flagg influence, it also features both of the primary characters of this strip, Rusty and Patty, in every panel and with a gorgeous dual portrait of them right in the center!

Look at those faces in panel two! Wow, impeccable rendering and some really cool quill work happening in those backgrounds.

The linework is truly exquisite proving (if need be) that there is clealry life (and quality) outside Carol Day ;)

Wow that is some gorgeous artwork!  Jeepers that's grand!!  And cool background info on the artist Frank Godwin.  Comic strips like these just instantly transport you back to a simpler time no matter if you read that particular strip or not.   Glad you could delve back into this facet of your collecting and share it with us all.

Really nice Rusty Riley example there. Comic strips from this time can be so beautiful.

I dig all the little lines that Godwin used. It gives it an engraving plate look, or like a wood carving. Lovely. And the delicate faces drawn in a turn-of-the-century style is a nice choice. It feels different than your usual late 40s art. Very cool trip back to your roots, Rubén. Viva la differencé! Congrat

Illustrator, well, could you help me place this call?
See, the number Mr. Palmer dials' old and faded
Tex's living in L. A. with my best horse van, Patty
Guy, he saw Arkansaw well and sometimes worried

Isn't that the way they say strip goes?
Dibujantes Venadenses
And give me the Rusty if you can Riley
So I can call just to tell them I' m fine and to show

Five head of cattle, I've learned Frank Godwin well
I only wish my lines could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real but that's not the way it feels

Gorgeous daily!  I hadn't seen such early examples from this strip, and reading your commentary, I now see the influences you describe.  Thanks for posting!

These early ones are fantastic.  I like them better than the earlier tryout dailies you see around.  Fantastic, not many from this era out there.
