DescriptionA stunning example of Bernie Wrightson's skill from his classic take on Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat', which ran in the May 1974 issue of Creepy. Beautifully detailed work that communicates a visual weight and darkness that is hard to describe. Bernie was an incredibly skilled artist and horror was definitely his jam.Social/Sharing |

Absolutely stupendous camera movement her and the brush work is as sublime as ever. Fantastic example, Chris. I already played it this past week, but this piece is calling for an encore.....
All the lonely nights I spend alone
Never 'round to love me
You're always gone
'Cause you're hangin' out
Breakin' the rules
Oh, the man has come
Lookin' for you
Black cat, nine lives
Short days, long nights
Livin' on the edge
Not afraid to die
Heart beat, real strong
But not for long
Better watch your step
Or you're gonna die!

Well, I definitely know what song I'll be listening to on the way home from work today! Thanks for that, Ruben!

Fantastic page, the detail in his linework just captures so much. I especially like the panel where he is falling down the stairs.

An absolutely outstanding page. This was snatched almost immediately after Mitch listed it (and before I could get to it), I guess you were the lucky guy!

Just a masterpiece of a page here.
Can only imagine how stunning it is to look at the actual original!
Bernie knew this was special. There is a note to assure the production people would not scar it up with any writing.

This was right about the time towards the tail end of his Swamp Thing run and the quality of his art was at an all time high. This page from Creepy allowed him to lean more into the horror illustration. An exceptional page with a full range of line widths and spacing that creates the atmosphere for danger in revealing the monster in plain sight.

I love all of Wrightson's Warren works, but the Black Cat is one of, if not my favorite. Each page is a masterpiece. On this one, I love the way Wrightson changes and uses perspective in each of his panels to tell the story and create tension. This is comic book art at its very best.

Absolutely PRIME era Bernie, working in his wheelhouse, and just killing it (no pun intended).....So much to love here. If you're getting Wrightson this is the era to play in for sure.

Superb example! Wrightson't Warren work, taken as a whole, might be the pinnacle of his career (and no, I haven't forgotten his glorious Frankenstein opus), and this page shows why. Beautiful.
