DescriptionWe went to an estate sale today (conducted at an off-site warehouse). There was quite a bit of science fiction and fantasy stuff there -- the person or couple clearly used to attend SF cons, as there were several old convention programs from Chicago area cons held in the late 1970's and 1980's, including Chicon IV, Windycon, Capricon and the Chicago Comic Con. They'd also belonged to the SCA, and we picked up some costume stuff we'll use when we go to the Ren Faire.We snagged several books but our most interesting buy was the one piece of original art we found, which clearly had been purchased at a convention art show. By artist Dean Ellis, it's the preliminary for "The Tar-Aiym Krang" by Alan Dean Foster, published by Ballantine in 1972. The prelim is very similar to the finished cover (which I'll show here as well), but the finished cover lacks the astronauts on the left. This was Foster's first published novel, and introduced his characters Pip and Flinx. I loved reading that series, beginning as a teenager, so was pleased to add this to our collection. Great piece! I've always loved pure space oriented science fiction. It ain't 'sexy', but so stirring to the imagination.
