DescriptionTwo spectacular Alex Toth pages (unfortunately not sequential) from issue 6 of DC’s Rip Hunter - Time Master (this one page 2), which saw publication in January of 1962.Alex Toth needs no introductions here; he produced a unique, singular, and broad body of work in comic books after starting his career as a freelancer for Famous Funnies in 1945. He’s been referred to by other artists of the time as ‘a genius’ (Irwin Hansen), as someone who ‘at the age of 16 or 17, was doing things far in advance of what [others] were doing' (Joe Kubert) and ‘at 21 or 22, I think, the best artist in the entire business' (Gil Kane). Talk about having the respect of your peers. Along the way, he would illustrate the comic movie adaptation for George Pal’s ‘The Time Machine’, published by Dell Comics and released in March 1960. His work on that seems to have had some influence on DC selecting him for art duties on Rip Hunter - Time Master, the first issue of which hit the stands in April of 1961. Rip Hunter featured an ordinary guy (well, he is a genius and knows fighting styles culled from across time) who travels through time in the appropriately named Time Sphere. And he does so with his friend Jeff Smith, his girlfriend Bonnie Baxter, and Bonnie's kid brother Corky (how 1960’s does that name sound?). The series ran for 29 issues between 1961 and 1965 and was filled with adventure and fun. What more could a comic reader in the early 1960’s ask for? Social/Sharing |

Beautiful work, of course, though something of a contradiction in terms. After all, given that he is recognized as a master of minimalism, this is extremely detailed work!

Sometimes you picture me
Toth’s drawing too far ahead
Pages calling to me, I can't hear
What Baghdad
Then you say, "go slow"
And I fall behind
The motor hum unwinds
If you're lost you can look and you find Corky
Time master time
If you sell, I will catch this, I'll be waiting
Time master time
If you're lost, you comment and you will find me
Time after time
If you sell, I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time master time
