DescriptionThe fact of Jimmy Olsen having his own book (and a long-running one at that) exemplifies the silly delights of "Silver Age" DC Comics. Besides Jimmy, and Lois, was there ever any character in comics who got their own book just for being the entourage of an actual superhero? Did Alfred ever have his own book? Foggy Nelson? Woozy Winks? Even the Teen Titans, who were actual super-powered beings, albeit teen sidekicks, had to share their title four-ways. I guess it says a lot about Superman, he was a great friend, unthreatened by Jimmy and Lois, he helped the people around him and made frequent (every issue) guest appearances in their pages to make sure their titles succeeded. You want to be Superman's best friend; I mean, who'd want to be Batman's best friend??Anyway, here's a solid piece of work by the ur-DC-house-style master Murphy Anderson. The use of blue pencil, invisible of course in the final product, adds a nice soft tone to the original page. Anderson packs a lot of efficient story-telling into this fast-paced page. The 6-panel grade is varied by a top and bottom bookended set of narrow horizontals, featuring a herd of wild horses and a swooping chopper. The little transitional third panel, with the Capitol dome in the bg, and non-descript DC office building in fg, hints at the "illustrated caption boxes" that appeared in DC comics now and then (I seem to remember them from "Strange Sports Stories"). The cigar about to slip out of Perry White's astonished mouth in panel five (or is it 6)? But I particularly treasure panel 2: "Jimmy Olsen eats a sandwich and works on a screenplay idea." Slice-of-life comics, a good decade before American Splendor! Social/Sharing |

That tiny sliver of the FBI headquarters is a quick caption transition. Anderson is truly a master storyteller to make Jimmy's adventures captivating through his artwork.

The draftsmanship in each panel, from the horses at the top to the helicopter at the bottom, makes is easy to understand why Murphy Anderson is such a well-respected legend in the comic book business.
