DescriptionLee Elias began his long career in comics working for Fiction House in 1943. He would work on both their Wings Comics and Rangers Comics titles. Elias had a style which was heavily influenced by Milton Caniff.Lee is best known for his work on Black Cat. For that reason I have always wanted to add a page from the series to my collection. When Mike Burkey offered this on Dealing Dealers of Comic Art, I had to snap it up. (Thanks Mike!) Artwork is from Black Cat #5 published in April 1947. Page five of the story "The Eye of Karnak". Our heroine, Hollywood film star Linda Turner becomes Black Cat in times of trouble and Nazi infiltration. (Most of which seem to conveniently occur right on her film sets?) Century Studios is using the actual Russian Crown Jewels (not props as sane people would) for Linda's current film. Enter our villain Ivan Resnick. Aware of this development he kidnaps both Tim Turner (Black Cat's father a former silent film star) and Rick Horne (news reporter and part-time sidekick) demanding the jewels as ransom. This page features everything you would want. Black Cat in almost every panel. Her famous Judo fighting skills. And a dastardly villain announcing, "It's I, Ivan Resnick, Your welcoming host. Won't you have a seat?" The bad guys just don't have the manners they did back in the '40s. (Although I guess few of us do!) My appreciation again to the Romitaman for offering this Golden Age page from a wonderful time in comics. Social/Sharing |

What a doozy! One of the most famous and enduring characters from the golden age that resonates because of her sexy outfit and girl power take charge attitude.

I love Elias's Black Cat! She twists Resnick's arm so far that I'm surprised it didn't break! Congratulations Lee!
