Description

When Superman returned at the end of the epic Death/Return story, there was a two page splash that featured him back in the classic costume. In the issue it is a horizontal DPS, but it was in fact the second image Dan Jurgens drew for the issue. The original vertical spread image is the one seen here, with a more dynamic pose with the swooping cape, but the note from editorial had come back that they didn’t want the reader to have to turn the book and preferred a horizontal spread. It was then redrawn for publication (also an iconic image). The original image however was too good to be left unused, so it was finished and included in the “return” issue Superman #82 as a folded oversized poster.

I was recently able to purchase this hand painted color guide that was used to create the poster from the colorist of that era of Superman comics, Glenn Whitmore. I can’t say that I actively seek out color guides, but as a 90’a Superman fan, this is a iconic image (at least to anyone who had that poster), from such an impactful scene in the story and Glenn’s colors defined that era of Superman stories! It also feels great to be able to purchase directly from Glenn (via his rep, Catskill Comics) and reward creators who have held on to these gems for 30 years now.
