Description

I'm a big fan of Dorman Smith's (1892-1956) political cartoon work. Smith had a wonderful cartoony, sort of like a stylized bigfoot approach. This post-WWI cartoon, circa 1923, captures his approach beautifully, along with some wonderful textures and lettering. I love the variety of tones he was able to work into the piece, keeping everything clean and readable.

According to an eagle-eyed Facebooker, "German reparation payments to France came to a head in Feb 1923 when France decided to move in on the Ruhr valley and kind of held it as collateral/hostage towards payment. The UK government was playing the parent trying to get the kiddies under control." She put the date on this as approximately six months on either side of February 1923.

Very nice to show the big boat causing the waves. Valuable lesson learned not to be repeated after WWII as common prosperity would lead to less war.
