DescriptionCover dated October 1993.First off, I’m a sucker for anthology series. DC resurrected the Showcase title for four years in the mid-1990s. Similar to Marvel Comics Presents, it featured a mixture of A-list characters and D-listers for whom this would be the closest they’d ever come to having a solo title. The talent creating the stories was also a mixture of top creators, new artists on the rise, and people we would barely see again. In this case, we got two artists who had already made huge marks in the comic book industry by the time they did this story. Bill Willingham created one of the best-remembered indie comics of the 1980s, Elementals. However, I didn’t see that book until the late 1990s. My first exposure to his art was in a pair of Justice League annuals that he did during the Giffen/DeMatteis era. I tried and failed a couple of times to get a page from one of those issues, so I was excited when I saw this page was available from one of the rare stories drawn by Bill for DC in the 1990s. And what a page, demonstrating that the Huntress was one of the more brutal members of the Batman family. Per the information provided by the seller, the moves that the Huntress uses here are moves that Bill learned in the Military Police to calm down a perp or risk having his arm broken. The MPs were taught not to take it that far, but the Huntress does things her own way. As for the inker, it’s Terry Austin. You know his work. Social/Sharing |

Great addition. Don't think I've ever seen Austin inking Willingham before. I like it!
Willingham's art from this period was so very good. Would love for him to draw more but guess the return of Fables with Willingham as writer is better than nothing.

I agree completely. I'd love to see more art from him, but his writing is pretty incredible as well (Proposition Player being a favorite of mine).

Classic 90's feel with a great 'fight scene' (not much of a fight here). Congrats!

Good to see some mainstream Willingham art. It's so interesting to see Austin inking him because while you might've thought it's going to look better than ever, I have to say I'm surprised that it actually doesn't look much different from the pages Rich Rankins used to ink. Or at least not much different from my MEMORY of what the Rankins pages looked like. I haven't really looked at them in ages. Still, nice, solid finishes.

Man, do you think all of the pain could have been avoided if he'd just said, "No..." in panel two? What would Huntress have done then? Awkward! What a beautiful page, Michael. I remember first seeing Bill's art on the front of Dungeon's and Dragons modules back in the 80's, then on those D&D ads in Marvel Comics, and always wished he'd get to do more work. Elementals was fantastic, but I lived 2 hours away from the nearest comic shop that carried it, and so scoring issues was iffy at best. Thank goodness for Showcase (and those JLA annuals)! Really great page here, Michael, with a super balance of black and white to dramatically convey the action and not shy away from the "gristle" (in true Willingham fashion). Congrats, man!

When you get into naming the body parts you're breaking, it must be personal.

Would have gotten interesting if she had kept going below the gut.

Man, I wish Willingham was a terible writer and had stayed drawing comics. Yeah...yeah...I know he's GREAT at both...just wish more art would be available from him.
Awesome page!!!

I'm with you. I remember when he started working for DC/Vertigo regularly around the turn of the century, I got excited that we'd start seeing more of his art. No such luck. But I think we are in agreement that it's better to get his writing without his art than nothing at all.

I too love his art from that period (and those anthologies for the reasons you mentioned).
Austin inking Willingham is an interesting combination here as his art is more round/cartoony than what Austin is used to ink.

The Huntress doesn't play, dude. Hurting her friend only...compounded your problems. :) Sorry, couldn't help the pun. I will beat myself severely. Very cool Huntress moment, doing her violent thing. And what great work from a great artistic pairing. Congrats!

Michael, wow! Such a stellar piece. These early 90s Willingham DC pieces are such gems.
Thanks so much for sharing.

Excellent page! I believe her next question was "Is this the gentleman...who ruined the buffet at the Harrow Club this morning?"

I blame Mike Ehrmantraut for what happened at the Harrow Club. Axel Foley is a stand-up guy.
