DescriptionMy search for examples of my absolute favorite early runs in comics brought me to this page from Incredible Hulk #425 by the stellar Gary Frank. While Peter David was the beating heart of that run, he also served as connective tissue for a slew of tremendous artistic talent. This was a bittersweet issue because we bid farewell to both Gary and Cam Smith midway through the over-sized issue (along with the end of the Pantheon saga). BUT the latter half brought on the new artistic team of Liam Sharp and Robin Riggs who I grew to love in equal (but different) measure. That's a story for another time though.Gary Frank holds a special place for me because he softened the blow of Dale Keown's departure from the book. Maybe it was the handful of rocky fill-ins between Dale leaving and Gary coming on (I won't disparage the fill-in artist here). Maybe it was the WCW-styled slow tease of his entrance (a la Goldberg) - first the cover to and a pinup in #400, then covers to #401 & #402 and then finally #403 where he bust in exhaling pyrotechnic smoke. SUPER stoked to have this page in my collection and a HUGE thank you to the collector who graciously parted with it. The quest continues! Social/Sharing |

I recall the time after Keown and I said recently that those were huge shoes to fill. This is a great example of how Frank rose to the occasion.

It had be daunting AF following THE modern Hulk artist in Keown. 100% agree Gary walked in with swagger and never looked back.

I thought Gary had just a SPECTACULAR run on Hulk. And maybe I'm in the minority, but I really liked Cam's inking on him during that run. Great half splash you got here. Just a beautiful example of this exceptional art team.

Definitely a big fan of Cam's line over Gary's pencils. It made the transition from Mark Farmer pretty smooth as well IMO. You're defintiely not in the minority!

Totally agreed with Gary Frank softening the blow of Keown's departure. Two absolute legends back to back on the book and any page from their run are absolute treasures. Huge congrats Eranga!

Gary's hulk was fun . Had a real youthful quality about him. And squeezable cheeks too! Congrats on this pick up!!

Peter David was certainly blessed with some amazing artists during his long tenure on the Hulk, and Gary Frank belongs high up there on the list. Very cool half splash of the Hulk here. Congrats on the pickup!

Even as a teen, I remember not being able to choose which one I preferred between Keown (more bombastic and aggressive) and Frank (better at emotions and likely plain storytelling). Very cool page.

Congrats on acquiring this, Eranga! Much like Tom Grummett had an impossible task following Pérez on New Titans, so to did Gary Frank after Keown left the book. But he stepped up and created a well crafted and regarded run of his own!

Eranga SMASH! Man, I loved his run on Hulk, too. How can you not like these stylings? It's so crisp and detailed, with great inks. Hey liked the Frank/Smith team. A gamma explosion of congrats!

Great Frank example from the run! Agree, seeing Keown leave was tough. But if there was someone who could follow him...it was Gary. Congrats!
