DescriptionCover dated December 1986.I finished watching Netflix’s Sandman a few minutes ago. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Except for one thing. Where was Elvira, Mistress of the Dark? When Neil Gaiman created the world of the Sandman, he established that the hosts of DC’s horror titles were residents of the Dreaming. This included the House of Mystery and its caretaker, Cain. During the mid-1980s, Cain’s role was usurped by Elvira, which means that Elvira must also be part of the Dreaming. I’m sure I’m not the only Sandman fan who eagerly awaited each new issue in the hope that this would be the one where Elvira would make her series debut. I was certain we’d see her making wisecracks about Destiny’s wardrobe, going on adventures with Death, leaving Desire speechless, etc. But it never happened! I had hoped that Gaiman and DC would fix their huge mistake by having Elvira appear in the live action series. But it didn’t happen. If you haven’t watched the show, you should still watch it, but consider this your warning that Elvira doesn’t appear. I’m hoping that if there’s a season two, it will happen there. In the meantime, please enjoy this page that gives us a taste of what was missing from Sandman. Social/Sharing |

It's going to be difficult to enjoy Sandman if there is no Elvira. As she puts the fun in funeral like she does here in this page. Congrats this is a beauty.

These are pages
These are pages of Elvira
Turner has more macabre sense
I promise
Giordano inks warm as this
And as you Dream it
You'll know it's true
That you love House of Mystery
It's true, Cain too
Is marked by cursing
That will grow in you, in you
These are pages you'll remember
When Gaiman streaming over you with Desire
To be part of the episodes you see in midnight hours
You'll know it's true that you are blessed and lucky
It's true that you
Are touched by Netflix
Abel grows and blooms in you

This may be the closest we will ever come to the Natalie Merchant/Elvira crossover that I've wanted to see since high school.

At the very least, I'm sure they can find a spot for Cassandra in season 2!

You raise a very good point, Michael! Ironically, it's another unsolved query to forever reside in... the House of Mystery! I was so thrilled to see Cain and Abel appear in 'The Sandman' (it was one of those "how true are they going to be?" moments that knocked me out in a very good way) that if Elvira would have shown up, too, I would have been certain I was dreaming. :) VERY fun page, Michael, with a beautiful balance of black and white. Love the top tier of panels! Congrats!

Elvira's absence from Sandman was simply due to DC not having any interest in adding more costs to the budget for the book every month, which they would've had to do since Elvira is a character portrayed by a real person who would have needed to be paid for her likeness. Of course, who's to say Gaiman cared or didn't care about Elvira as well? But one thing is certain, Michael. YOU apparently have a love for Elvira that will not be extinguished!

Money should be no object when it comes to Elvira! Pay her whatever it takes to make the Dreaming complete!
