DescriptionPublished 1969.Title page. A living star is stripped of its power and banished. So begins a tale with a classic JSA/JLA crossover. The malevolent being wreaks havoc on Earth-Two and the Justice Society of America cannot stop him so they send for help from Earth-One heroes, The Justice League of America. And the star's name is Aquarius and coincidentally the song Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In was the most popular song in 1969. Social/Sharing |

Justice League my DC stars
'Cause the lines thrill me
Wherever you are
Sid just Dick's with you
And the art will glow
And I need your light
And Miki you know
Starlight, star bright
Death star I see tonight
Starlight, star bright
Make title page alright
Starlight, star bright
Death Star in Wars tonight
Starlight, star bright, yeah!

Ink splatter by Sid Greene !! A pretty good artist in his own right, he's my favorite JLA inker on Sekowsky and Dillin.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure naming the star Aquarius was the furthest thing from a coincidence and used precisely because of the song's popularity. Either way, I love the Sid Greene inks. The technique he chose to use to create the facial features is beautiful. Although the heroes may not be included on this one, it's still quite a coup to own a splash from one of the classic, earlier JLA/JSA crossovers!

It was my first thought that it was not a coincidence but the onsale date for the book was June 12th and the Fifth Dimension released their single on March 8th and reached number 1 on the Billboard charts on April 12th. So I am not sure if that would have been enough time to hear the song and then write, produce and ship the book. Since the song was a mashup of two songs from the musical Hair that started in 1967, it is probable that the name came from there.

Nice! I appreciate the scholarship, Miki. Let me just add one more thing. Historically speaking, at least when I was growing up and listening to radio regularly, the radio stations would play "the latest single" from an artist sometimes months before it was released to record stores. As the on sale date for the singles got closer, then they'd not only play the songs but also start telling listeners when the single would be in record stores. So with that in mind, wouldn't the song have been in the public conscience long enough for Denny O'Neil to have been aware of the song in time to use the name? Plus, as you mention, it's Hair that popularized the word "Aquarius" to begin with.
