Description

Batman: Child of Dreams was a manga series written and illustrated by Kia Asamiya in the early 2000s. It was first published in Kodansha's Magazine Z before later being collected into a graphic novel (which is where I discovered it). The series follows Batman as he tries to figure out who is selling a lethal drug that allows the person who ingests it to shapeshift into Batman's villains. In the story, Batman is helped by an inexperienced but plucky Japanese reporter, Yuuko Yagi, who, at one point in the story, is transformed into Catwoman by the main villain. Asamiya-san, a big Batman fan, had a ball taking the Dark Knight from Gotham to Tokyo while fighting the most famous members of his rogues gallery manga style.

Asamiya is well known for his work on his own manga, such as Silent Mobius and Steam Detectives, several anime series, and even some design work for the Godzilla movie franchise. In the West, he is probably best known for his run on X-Men with Chuck Austen, as well as the manga adaptation of Star Wars: Episode 1.

When I recently got the chance to get a sketch on a Japanese "shikishi" art board from him, after a brief moment of indecision, I decided to ask him to draw his version of Catwoman. When I saw the finished results, I knew that I had made the right choice.

Very nice! Did you get this from him in person? I have debated getting a commission through his agent, but they have an automated request form, and the characters I most associate with him after the Silent Möbius cast are not options.
