Description

You might ask, who the %#@$ is Pooky Jones? Well, Pooky is the head and beard in the fourth and fifth panels, who is being supported by a giant ape covered with a sheet. This original is from the 1936 sequence which also introduced (on October 23, 1936) Popeye's long lost father, Poopdeck Pappy. In fact, the existence of these two new characters was announced (in words only; no images) in the August 7, 1936 Thimble Theater/Popeye daily -- "Two new characters will be born during this story - 'Poopdeck Pappy,' Popeye's Poppa -- and 'Pooky Jones.'" Apparently Poopdeck Pappy proved to be much more popular than Pooky, his sidekick. When I did a Google search to check the spelling of "Pooky," I found no mention of him at all on the internet. Still, this strip is the first appearance of this character, who, by the way, turns out to be very short and to have a long beard. Oh yeah, the Jeep is also in this strip.
