Description

A short story pencilled and inked by Frank Frazetta telling the story of true-life Medal of Honor recipient, Master Sergeant Travis Watkins.

Travis Earl Watkins was born on September 5, 1920 and died just short of his 30th birthday on September 3, 1950 while engaged in combat during the Korean War. As depicted on this page, he was paralyzed and seriously wounded while defending soldiers under his leadership during the Battle of Yongsan. On the day of his death, he ordered his men to retreat from their unsafe position and leave him behind. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on February 16, 1951.

New Heroic Comics was an Eastern Color Printing Company book; Eastern was most notable for its Funnies on Parade and Famous Funnies publications that marked the beginning of the American comic book industry. Frank Frazetta was doing some great work for Eastern/Famous in the early 1950's (his Buck Rogers covers, some amazingly delicate work in Personal Love and signature look in Heroic Comics) and I'm thrilled to have such a striking piece from him from that period.

Awesome.  I think Frazetta did some of his best work in comics.

Frazetta shows us a man's valor in a soaring portrait of his spirit even as his body is broken.  You can not help but to think that Frazetta was moved by this story and made it his mission to do his very best.

So cool! It looks like a mash up of Jack Davis and Frank Frazetta's styles combined. Thanks for giving us the background information, Chris, as it really helps to put context on the piece and makes it all the more special.

What a great example of the first blush of Frazetta's talent. He went on to do so much more, but his work in comics before he jumped to being Al Capp's uncredited assistant was certainly a high water mark and this shows why that work remains so respected.

It's a "Frazetta/Davis/Kurtzman"-looking kick-ass page for sure. A+

Wow! Stunning Frazetta splash! What a handsome page from a master illustrator--Frazetta really shows his craftsmanship here. I love the composition of the page, the figurework and the superb inks. This is why the Golden Age was, indeed, Golden.
