DescriptionCover dated September 1967.Peter, Davy, Micky and Mike. Hey, hey, they're the Monkees! And people say they monkey around! The Monkees were a phenomenon during the 1960s, created to cash in on Beatlemania. Given the success of their TV show and their hit records, merchandising opportunities soon followed. And the pinnacle of those licensed goods? A comic book from Dell! I was thrilled to get a page of original art from that comic by Jose Delbo on a recent Dueling Dealers! Thanks, Anthony! I became a fan of the Monkees as a kid in the 1980s. I would watch reruns of the 1960s show on local TV, and the combination of comedy and music was a lot of fun. I would also hear their music during car rides since my dad always had the radio tuned to CBS-FM, the oldies station here in NY. As an adult, I saw the Monkees in concert three times, but sadly not all four members at the same time. I saw Davy, Peter and Micky put on a phenomenal show around 12 years ago, with Davy in particular performing with an energy of a person half his age. Sadly, Davy passed away in 2012, after which Mike returned to the group following a long hiatus. I saw the Mike-Peter-Micky combination two times before Peter left us. With Mike's passing in December 2021, Mickey is the only Monkee left, but the group's body of work will live on. Now if the damn Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would just admit them already! The group has been unfairly criticized in some corners for not being a "real band" since they were put together by a studio (the "Prefab Four") and didn't play their own instruments (at least initially). That being said, those four guys created some magic, and one of my favorite Monkees songs is "You Just May Be the One," which Mike wrote. If you're not familiar with the group or that song, here's a clip from the group's eponymous show. Social/Sharing |

A fun group of daydream believers! I grew up with the re-runs as my mom would watch the show when she could catch it. Nice add, Michael!

I have to confess that even as a young kid I wasn't grabbed by this show, as it seemed "stupid and cheesy" to me even then. But I never missed an opportunity to listen when Daydream Believer played! Good looking, solid art, I have to say.

From a nostalgia perspective, I would not have minded picking this one up myself. The TV show was on for almost my entire childhood in either first run episodes or reruns and I kind of took over my older sister's Monkee album collection when she went off to college (I was ten years younger) and I even had an issue or two of the comic. Jose Delbo does a good job capturing the group's likenesses (or, in Mike's case, the back of his head) and the over the top silliness of their TV adventures.

Wow...!! MONKEES?!? I don't know that there's any limit to the cool things you'll post online for us all to enjoy, Michael McIssac! How awesome is this?!? My wife is a big Monkees fan and brought me aboard long ago. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find out there was a Monkees comic - and this is a great page, from the wrap-up to the story (and the unforgettable moral of investing in televisual systems anytime you find a chunk of gold in your shoe - would that make it Mikey's Stepping Stone?) to the fact that you (technically) have all four of them on the page. Groovy cool, Michael! Sweet pick up!
