Murphy Anderson's inks are really evident on this page. I would not figure it for Joe Staton pencils except for that 3rd panel. Great looking page !!!

Digging in line
To see in Mordru's mind
And there's Joe Staton
Long tunnel
Hideaway I tried to stay
I'd be there, waiting for
Saturn the girl
Is singing songs to me
Beneath the Murphy, inks you know

You gotta love all the kooky, way over the top abilities that DC had the Superman Family demonstrate. Nothing was off limits! We're supposed to suspend our disbelief and imagine he's tunneling with only one hand and doing it at such a high rate of speed that he's able to do it while flying fast enough for the human chain to also be suspended in midair in a tunnel no more than 2 to 3 feet high, despite the fact that there's nowhere for all the rock he's digging out to go! When I was just starting out reading/collecting, this was the stuff that drove me nuts and made it clear why Marvel ate DC's lunch on a regular basis. But today, this is the type of stuff I really dig, dig? 😄

Oh - I can find plenty of examples in both publishers where I went - that can't be right. 😀 The 'eating their lunch' is a bit harsh as even though Marvel did overtake DC in sales in the 70's, it wasn't until the 80's and the 90's that they dominated. For example, in 1978, the Legion was still outselling the Avengers.

Oh, Marvel was definitely outselling DC handily by the 1980's, but I thought the 70's too. Perhaps only on some titles at that point? Either way, my point is just to say that the very things that DC did back then which I found utterly ridiculous, are today the things I find so charming and fun!

I remember this story fondly. And you are right about Anderson's inks. A great Legion page.
