DescriptionBeen a couple months since I posted. Lots going on (all good, just busy!), so coming back I wanted to post a big’n, and for me, can’t get much bigger – the cover to the launch of the Coates Black Panther series by the incomparable Brian Stelfreeze! Too much goodness here, and also literally BIG on a 13x19 board!I mean, what can I say?! This image was EVERYWHERE when the book was previewed and released – posters, banners, online for ads, YouTube video previews…you name it. I personally have it on a t-shirt (which I just happened to have on when I found out I had the opportunity to pick up the art!) and a comic book storage box. Just saw it on some party napkins :) Maybe the definitive modern BP image. Helluva way to start a series off, which of course coincided with BP’s arrival in the MCU in Cap Civil War :) First off, thanks to Brian and Jason Schachter for allowing me to pick this up; in a great home – trust! Was so cool talking with Brian about BP in general, his work over the years, the whole nine, when I picked this up. Definitely honored to be caretaker. And all of my fellow collector buds who knew I got it? Thanks for all the congrats, folks, much appreciated! Y’all know this was an unreal get for me. Literally jumping off the walls when secured :) This along with the ASM Frenz page I picked up earlier this year (you could say childhood grail and adulthood grail) AND some other outstanding gets…2022 very tough be beat on the art front. No doubt. Second – the art! Did I already say “what can I say?!” I’ll try a bit here. I love my worm’s eye hero shots and it works to outstanding effect here. Strong, imposing, regal, sleek…it’s all here in this central shot. The blacks on BP are stark, as they should be, with a strong angular vibe that flat out works. And you got some meticulous work on that background – some CLEAN lines. Also a harbinger of what comes in the story…Wakanda in turmoil, let’s just say. Brian did only 3 pieces traditionally from his run, in terms of interiors and all the covers, and this was one. Too fortunate I am, to provide a little Yoda-ism. Also goes along well with my commission from Brian - https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1388152 Got the BP 2 flick coming up soon and I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure the team kept the late great Chadwick Boseman in mind and heart, RIP. Lots of Brian’s work, from costume elements like the suit appearing on and off and absorbing kinetic energy, to the overall look of Wakanda, was used for the first film. Was awesome seeing things from the comics, from Brian and others over the years, in the movie. And again this book was released at the same time as Cap Civil War – so I love it as a standalone piece of art no doubt but I also like how it ties to seeing BP on film, at least for me. I mean…BP?! In a movie? Then headlining his own?! Whoulda thunk. Happy Halloween and happier collecting, all! #WakandaForever Social/Sharing |

The King is here! The King is here! Yes, the upshot always makes for a more imposing and dramatic scene, especially for a scary looking mofo as T'Challa is here! Great acquisition, dude, this one's a realy beauty!

Thanks, my man! Honestly a big part of picking it up was having a lot of my fellow collector buds at Heroes, being part of my ride! And oh yeah you know I HAD to break it down for a minute after securing :)
Thanks, Daryl, and ALL for the congrats! MUCH appreciated!

Congrats again my friend on being able to acquire a truly iconic image and definitely one of the most (if not the most) recognizable image of BP in the modern era. I've loved seeing this image pop up on shirts, posters, multiple covers, ads and even comic boxes.

YESSSSS!!!!!! I am so excited for you - and to formally see this incredible piece in your gallery - that I'm having a bit of difficulty scraping together the sentences... First off, CONGRATULATIONS on the incredible pick up, my good man. This is, without question, THE definitive image of the Panther in a generation. Talk about MAJESTY. From the worm's eye POV, to the fine-line skyline behind, to the mountain of the man front and center... With his mask shaded in such a way that you cannot make out a single person's features, it is obvious that this is the KING OF THE NATION on display here. And with the flags smouldering in the background? Pure power. A perfect image of the Panther and all he represents, and it is now home where it belongs. Fitting that you're posting this on Halloween, so we can insert a righteous "BOO" into the inevitable "BOO-YAH"! Boo-yah, Khalil... BOO-YAH! Congrats of the highest order, sir, and welcome back; we missed you. :)

Ooh Yeah, ooh, woo
Black Panther
This Black Panther’s fire
Clean as line of Brian Stelfreeze
Hey, it’s Wakanda Forever
Shown by line as Legacy
The cover measurements
Are perfect in the larger dimension
T’Challa’s figure
That's sure enough getting attention
He’s poetry in motion
A beautiful sight to see
I get so excited
Viewing this Brian Stelfreeze

Oh dang, so happy you got this! Stelfreeze of course does a great job of depicting Panther here (love those shadows), but I really love the burning flags which hint at the story within the comic itself.

When someone you know gets a piece of art that they love, it's easy to get jealous. Not so much for the actual art. But more so for the emotional aspect of it. It's such a great feeling and you want to feel that too. That's what it's all about I think. So congrats man, I know what this means to you. Hope I can experience those same emotions with a future acquisition.

Thanks, Eric! It definitely feels good to hit a big target, and I know what you mean about the jealous feeling. But a good jealous :)

Thanks, Magnus, appreciate it! As far as BP art, do what you gotta do, man. I don't officially have a monoploy. Kind of ;) But seriously I do dig seeing nice BP pieces in other galleries. The more fans the merrier. Happy hunting, bud!

For me, the most impactful Black Panther cover is the first Gil Kane Black Panther vs the KKK cover, but that was an image for the Bronze Age. Ta-Nehisi Coates taking over the character built upon what Kirby, McGreggor, Buckler, Graham, et al. had done with BP in the past, and gave him a new mission statement for the twenty-first century, but it was Stelfreeze who manifested that into the modern consciousness. Yes, this one is special.
