DescriptionAlright, you don't need to have read this series to know that Sabretooth did not actually slay the X-Men, but I do love the cover intimating that he COULD take them all out. In actuality, he did infiltrate the X-Mansion and proceeded to have a good scrap with all of them, just before Storm ultimately decided to use her electricity generating power to fry Sabretooth's eyes, thereby blinding him.At any rate, I've been a fan of Sabretooth since long before Marvel decided he'd make a great addition to the X-Men rogues gallery. I first encountered him in PMIF #66, one of a couple of dozen comics that were given to me by my next door neighbour in 1980, two years before I actually got bit by the reading/collecting bug. I was immediately attracted to the character, due in large part to how cool he looked, especially as drawn by the Gammill/Villamonte team, on what is one of the best artistic runs of all time in ANY mainstream superhero comic. Sabretooth may have been considered a 2nd or 3rd tier villain then, paired up with the Constrictor with the objective of robbing people and places of their jewels and historic artifacts, but even in that specific issue, in only his 2nd ever appearance, there is a scene in which we can see just how absolutely savage and dangerous he already was and it gave readers a view of what was to eventually come for the character's development. With Phoenix, Beast, Rogue, Storm and Professor Xavier all laying on the floor, seemingly dead while Sabretooth stands a few feet away from them, staring at the blood dripping from his claws (no doubt admiring his handiwork), this cover essentially represents everything Sabretooth is about: Savagery and pure, wanton bloodlust. Of course, in their infinite wisdom and in spite of not having been under the purview of the Comics Code Authority for seven or eight years when this comic was published, Marvel explicitly demanded that the colorist digitally remove all the blood from Sabretooth's fingers, because they knew very well that the average age of comic readers was still much closer to 4 than 40. Sigh.... Anyway, I love imagery on display here and have a special fondness for all of these characters, so I'm pretty stoked to add this cover to my gallery. Social/Sharing |

WHAT? A cover image that is an over-exaggeration of what actually happens in the issue, JUST to lure you into spending the money to buy said issue??? I am INCENSED !!! I take UMBRAGE !! And ... and ... OTHER words I'm not quite sure of their meaning !!! But I'll forgive Marvel, because otherwise how could they come out with amazingly powerful cover images like this one. This is a real gem!!

GLORIOUS! Not sure why Creed looks upset about it though lol. Also, Wolverine looks so much hairy than I remember.

And even in death Jean and Ororo look lovely.

No bloodlust here, at least not on the comic book anyway!

let the bodies hit the floor. Let The Bodies Hit The Floor. LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOOR! I remember that other issue, too. He licks the blood off his fingers in that one, I think? But I guess that was ok for the censors. Heh. This is a great Sabretooth cover by Grummett, with the bodies and blood you want to see (well, imagine I guess after the edit). Love all the detail, too, like the shag on Beast. Bloody marvelous

Feels like I'm standing in a mutant dream
Of blood mists with grail conquer pose
Feels like I'm lost in a deep cloud of a deadly scent
Slashing, eviscerate you
Those days of warm rains come bleeding back to me
Miles of mindless cover fights (Summer nights)
Secret mutants shared within the heat of the Sabertooth
Out of the stillness, Chris Claremont words
Say it, say it again
Sabertooth X-Men Forever
Grummett art, from DaCollector
Deadly stare it will be with you
Every piece Grummett shares with you

What could be the only topper to this kind of blood feast? A Pickles chaser. But glorious all the same. Nice score!

I share your love for Sabretooth, a character who's been drawn by many great artists (for me, it was his 1st under Byrne).
And you know I also share your love for that run of Power Man & Iron Fist ;)
I like that Grummett went all feral on him, with features closer to an animal, and rednecky with the hair and eyebrows. Not my fav' rendition of the character but it's pushing him towards his artistic logical extreme and needs to be noted as daring.

Love the look of all the hair. Great Sabretooth piece. If I were a movie director and I were to recreate a scene like this, it would have flickering lighting with a slow strobing effect. Harsh silhouettes across Sabretooth's face while he changed monsterous emotions. The backround scene of bodies would be flickering in and out of visability and focus as well. The soundtrack would be Drowning Pool- Bodies. Such a great piece. Congrats!!!

Always dug Sabretooth - perfect Wolvie AND X-Men villain. Here, a "savage defeat" no doubt! I like the way his face is more animalistic here, particularly the eyes. Definitely makes you want to see what's going on IN the book! Congrats!

This cover further supports my theory that Sabretooth is a jerk. Great image by Grummett and Hamscher.

'Another Marvelously Misleading Marvel Cover.' Sabretooth could not even take out the bins. Lol. Grabs the attention though! Nice cover.

The Grummett train rolls on! This kind of cover works really well in alternate reality (continuity) books because there's a big likelihood this could actually happen within the pages. Nice get, man!

Awesome cover, Ruben. I too have always loved Sabretooth and never got over Black Cat kicking his ass in SSM 119 :(

Thanks, Mikey! Man, I'd completely forgotten about that Black Cat beatdown, which is odd because I used to own the cover to that issue. But I guess I felt it was so stupid and out of the realm of reality, even comic book reality, that I put it out of my mind as something that didn't actually happen.

Wow, crazy you once owned that. Almost as crazy as the Black Cat getting the best of him. Inconceivable!

Another killer Grummett, Ruben - WOW! It was strong even with the colorist being forced to neuter the published image (it looks like anything resembling blood was removed EVERYWHERE, from the pools on the ground to splashes that were on the fallen X-Men), but it is wicked cool to see the true image (wow, that's a lot of blood) and marvel once more at Tom's ability to really choose the RIGHT single moment to depict for a compelling cover. He's REALLY good at that! :) Tom also does a great job capturing Sabretooth's acting here. Sabretooth looks enraged and ferocious, of course, but I do buy that in this moment he may feel conflicted and has some extra anguish over his actions after having been taken in by the X-Men... especially gazing at his hands like that, in a Lady Macbeth "out damned spot" moment (that the colorist unfortunately made good on...). It's certainly the moment all the fans were waiting for: when is Sabretooth going to snap and take them all down...? Congrats, Rubén - this is awesome!

Such senseless carnage. If they just invited him to the Christmas party this could of been avoided. All he really wants is love and perhaps some new mittens.
