DescriptionAs I am not exceedingly well-heeled (it is quite the opposite, in fact), I have been trying to exercise some self-discipline lately in the purchase of original artwork which has generally gone up steeply in price across the board (certainly for more vintage examples).Unfortunately, I couldn't resist this particular piece. I would like to blame Rubén when he rekindled my love for Hulk artwork with his show many moons ago. Alas, we are all given the power of freewill although I suppose that he must shoulder some blame for reawakening what had long lain dormant. I don't have any Ron Wilson Hulk artwork and his inker on this story, Fran (Frank) Matera, was, I believe, a one-off inker for this specific occasion. However, the image of the Hulk just gripped my attention and I ended up paying far more than I had originally planned for it. The entire story itself is a poignant one - with the Hulk looking out for as well as rescuing a young boy, ultimately reuniting him with his parents (including a somewhat irresponsible father who, thankfully, ultimately learnt his lesson in proper parenting). In a nutshell, the fantastic image of the Hulk was the key attraction for me and I am glad to be its steward for the foreseeable future. PS: Many thanks to Rubén for reminding me to point out that it is part of a double page splash (this would also be evident from the piece itself). I have included the full published DPS for context (many thanks once again to Rubén for this). As he aptly put it in his comment, " if one half of this piece had to go missing, it least it was the half with the roller coaster!" Social/Sharing |

I've always believed that Ron Wilson was underrated. This is a great page and proof that he deserves a lot more love than he gets.

I love the shorter, thicker, bulkier Hulk reminiscent of Kirby's Hulk and Wilson did a great job emulating that look here. While I think Fran Matera was far better suited to newspaper strip art, I still quite like most of the inking here. It's such a shame the left half of this double page splash/spread is lost to the ages, but if one half of this piece had to go missing, it least it was the half with the roller coaster!
Oh, and as the Hulk has always held a very special place in my heart, I am very happy to take the blame for rekindling your love of this character. You're welcome!

Many thanks, Rubén! Yes, this is more reminscent of Kirby's Hulk. And the inking on this piece is very nice indeed. I guess that, on balance, I should thank you!

Actually, you are well heeled. You just do not want to sell the art that could make you a millionaire. Thats the demon of collecting for you. A hobby that can leave you poor despite being rich. Lol. This is a lovely page by the way.

Many thanks, Peter. As you have alluded to, though, it is just "paper profits" so long as one does not sell. Of course circumstances may force sales, even at a loss. The decision to hang on to one's collection can be interpeted both ways - either as a commitment to, or even passion for, the hobby, or just plain stupidity. I cannot obviously be the judge of that!

This is an absolutely incredible image of the Hulk - one of the best I have seen - and the perspective of the piece is exceptional. Ron Wilson really knocked this one out of the park. Congratulations on a great addition to your collection!

Beautiful page, CAB, and I just find it easier, should the situation EVER present itself, to just go with it and blame Rubén... ;) lol
This one has such a -delicious- Kirby flavor to me, especially because of those first two panels... I went and flipped through a couple of (reprint!) issues to see exactly what page I was thinking of (FF #12? Avengers #1? Avengers #3?) and I was never able to find the exact one I was after, but the feeling still remains: the potential energy stored up by those first couple panels to allow for the dramatic release in the third is worthy of the King of Comics. Ron and Fran knock it out of the hamusement) park here!
And how INTERESTING that this is one half of a DPS. I honestly don't know if I would have noticed that (even with the "H!" sound effect remnant) if it hadn't been for Rubén's comment (see? There I go blaming Rubén again... ;) ). Thanks for posting the whole spread - so cool to see the whole thing, and notice how my perception of it changes. I hope you find the other page sometime and are able to reunite them. Gamma-charged add, CAB! Congrats!

Many thanks, Jason! It could be Avengers #1? My memory is vague but it could be the page with the Hulk sticking his head through a railway track? I could be way off on this but perhaps an amusement park rollercoaster track might be the analogue? But I do agree that we should blame Rubén! That having been said, he did point out that I have the better half of the DPS!

The bane of all carnies since 1962. Remember the good ole days, when you wanted some coaster cars crushed you just needed to send them flying off the rails. Ah, those were the days.

Now, that is one of the most unexpected (and unique) comments insofar as this particular piece is concerned!

Astonishing Hulk page by Ron Wilson! Hulk sees a Roller Coaster and thinks it's attacking? And then he attacks first? This is clearly not the Hulk with Bruce Banner's brain in charge. Love that bottom panel of Hulk smashing into the Roller Coaster! This page is insanely cool!

Thanks so much, Jeff! Ruben has since forgiven me, I think! But as I said, he must bear some blame for his part in all this!
