DescriptionWraparound cover art for book 11 in the 'Martian Tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs' series published by Del Rey Books, July 1979. Also published in 'Michael Whelan's Works of Wonder' art book, and in various forms on other covers - see additional photos. To see the detail in person that is lost on the small cover is a thrill in itself.I would visit bookstores weekly in the 70s-80s just to see the cover art on the new books...before the Dark Times...before the eBook. Michael's covers for this series (or any he created) always stood out among the myriad of books on those shelves. 22" X 28" Acrylics and Airbrush on Masonite Thanks Pat and Steve for helping a dream come true. WOW! I have these paperbacks packed away in a box somewhere, and seeing this beauty is inspiring me to get them all out & bask in those covers. Great, great pickup.

A very major piece! The colors of Mars' atmosphere and red ground is painted with great care. The figures and the winged beasts are also done with precision and with proper weight that would have you believe their flying to be natural in that environment.

Seeing this image took me back to the 1980s when the paperback with this painting was in full view on my father's bookshelf. I haven't thought of it since. Thank you for the Barsoom/Jasoom-like transportation to a place in my childhood.
