DescriptionThis is my most expensive piece of artwork for the year. I don't really purchase pieces like these anymore because much original artwork has risen far beyond my financial means. Indeed, by way of digression, the silver lining as a result is that I can dig into my archives and console myself with the fact that I do indeed have a great many nostalgic pieces that didn't cost an arm and a leg (although I am, at the moment, reluctant to cash in on them, still clinging on to the ideal that the hobby is still something to be enjoyed and even treasured). But I couldn't resist this piece although I already have pieces from this particular book (which, come to think of it, is a kind of double-edged sword). As I have said before, this is the only time that Gene Colan and Wally Wood collaborated and they really outdid themselves - especially in the fight scenes involving Cap (such as the present one which oozes dynamic action). Two geniuses collaborating on one of the most iconic superheroes to have been created - with Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan thrown in! What a way to end the year! Social/Sharing |

If I'm locked in a page
And Gene drew it all today
Bid so wantonly, Wood would still ink this the same?
Colan showed you no flaws
Wally Wood inks be strong
Tell me honestly, would Wood still ink Gene the same?
Right about now
If he drew for life, Cap, would Wood stay in this line?
Or is Wood gonna say goodbye?
Can you tell Gene right now?
If I couldn't buy Wood, the fancy things in life
Stan Lee, would it be alright?
Boston show me that you know

Boston show me that you know
Wood didn't stay long
Not even for one song
But that was his way
Never a desire to stay
Especially with Stan
Who wasn't his man
Rest in peace both men
As well as Stan the Man

A stunner from a rare dynamic pairing. That last panel BWANG I'm sure was worth every penny.

Many thanks, Jeff! As mentioned, the dynamic battle sequences in the story (including this one) are simply amazing - the end product seems to me to be greater than the sum of the individual parts (which are of course already excellent).

That's Wood at his post-EC finest! And he does a great job of letting Colan's pencils come throught. The action shots are particularly wonderful, but the inking is just so, so lush. Congrats! And Happy New Year my friend!

Thanks so much, Rob! I do agree that, unlike with most other pencillers, Gene's pencils were not overwhelmed by Wood inks - although Wood inks on virtually anything are always a plus and are almost invariably a joy to behold. As I mentioned before, it is such a shame that they only collaborated this one occasion. Happy New Year to you too!

SPLANG! KRAKK! That's the sound of this page bouncing off my Wood and Colan love to crash into my onomatopoeia obsession. ;) This is an incredible page. Top to bottom, I love it all, and lament that they didn't work together a lot more. Great page!

Many thanks! Yes, I keep lamenting the fact that they did not work more together. The resulting artwork is so good that even the sound effects seem totally appropriate!

Ouch. Cap is tough as nails but inside he's a big softie. They may have caught the traitor but they hurt poor Cap's feelings in the process. Bad Fury, bad Fury.

Absolutely, John! The end page to this issue - as you put it - says it all.

Wow, what a fantastic page. I usually find pages with this many non-symmetrical panels "too busy", but Colan's figures and camera movement are kept in such constant motion that it doesn't feel busy at all. The Wood inks are fabulous, of course, and are extremely complimentary to the pencils. What a way to end the year!

Many thanks, Rubén! Yes, the whole page just goes fluidly by - the sum is indeed greater than its parts.

What a fantastic Captain America action sequence! One of the best I've ever seen. And so beautifully drawn. And it's another example of how Cap is always concerned about protecting everyone else from any kind of danger. Great addition!!

Thanks so much, Paul! It is a wonderful sequence indeed - as Rubén has pointed out, the page is busy, yet flows so very well.

Thanks so much, Mikail! However, with ever rising prices (especially for vintage artwork), this is now the extremely rare exception. So glad I could make this happen though.

Holy mazola! This is jam-packed with SO much - wow... Incredible to believe that the panel borders are only broken by one sound effect and two word balloons (and only in the first and last panels). This just feels like pinnacle Marvel zeitgeist to me; having -just- "aged out" of the primal raw fury of the formative early "Marvel Age of Comics", this is Marvel in full force and hella swagger, strutting. A "damn the torpedoes", kitchen sink kind of page that Aaron N nailed in his comment: magical. Panel 3 is the killer for me here (although panel 9 is pretty darn delicious with the textures on Cap's tunic, impact lines, and completely vertical sound effect): I love the Android reaching for the viewer, and the right thumb covering part of the face there feels even more inhuman and menacing. Face it, tiger - you just hit the jackpot. Again. :) Scintillating page! Congrats, CAB! Happy holidays and thank you for sharing this beauty with us!

Thanks so much, Jason! As has been observed before, nobody delivers as insightful and even erudite an analysis as you do. The Wood inks really add the textures which you so wonderfully describe. Wishing you and the family a very Happy New Year too!

Thanks so much, Benno! As I have lamented time and again, it is so unfortunate that this pair of great artists only collaborated this once. But we still need to be grateful for little mercies.

Many thanks, Toni, for your kind words of encouragement. However, for me at least, it was a really large outlay. Still, I am very glad that I did go for it.

Thanks so very much, Dave! The problem, of course, was with the cost. Still, with just this one collaboration, it was really all too tempting to go for more than one page.
