DescriptionA very powerful cover tied to the Siege crossover (who remembers anything about it, please?) and coming out of Brian M. Bendis’ great Avengers tenure, which revitalised (created?) the franchise. One of the great aspects of that run for me is that Bendis had clearly read the same 80s comics that I did and brought all those super cool B or C-list characters to the foreground like Spider-Woman, Luke Cage and Iron First or Brother Voodoo to name a few :) Mr Immonen made a bold choice for this cover, which is very graphic, more than his usual I’d say, and makes heavy use of black and shadows. Cage looks super badass and dangerous here. This feeling is enhanced by the fact that his eyes are covered by shadows. I always liked how Stuart drew him. Very big on a human scale but not Hulk big. Here you can tell that he is struggling, probably to bring down the columns on his sides (or trying to maintain them in place?). I love the Asgardians carvings on those, a very nice touch grounding the whole scene in reality. Many elements add to the design and tension of the scene. His straining face obviously. The fact that we only see his shadowed torso and his overextended arms without his hands. The tilted columns on his left and right that box him in. The crumbling Asgardian architecture behind him. This is not your generic pinup-y cover, it tells a story or at least prompts you to open the book to see what it is all about. Let’s mention the usual expert inks of Wade. The great spotting of the blacks, the fine use of tiny crosshatching (yum!). To conclude, it has not escaped me that this is my third Immonen cover and my second Cage themed cover by him :) This is the third day of my 2023 CAF birthday party. Social/Sharing |

Nothing makes a piece pop like generous portions of blacks and shadows. Great image and great cover.

Nothing says Happy Birthday more than Luke Cage busting through toward the reader. Appreciate your comments since I joined CAF a couple of years ago.

Luke's posture and physique are really well drawn, which is of course to be expected from Immonen. The posture in particular is what I like best, as it has a lot of motion to it. I also enjoy the cross hatching technique used to fade out his legs.

Oh, now there's a beauty! Fantastic cover, F M, and it feels like Stuart and Wade were channeling a bit of Straczynski 'Thor' Coipel with that backing architecture (and that thin penant flying high like that) and those rune characters... 'Fear Itself' would be coming out about a year after this, and I wonder if this cover had any impact on editorial as to who might be a good choice for the art chores on that series... I can never get enough Immonen, and Immonen Luke Cage is something REALLY special; not so much "Sweet Christmas" as "Sweet Birthday"! :)
"P"! (and there's the third part of my CAF birthday greeting to you, Fred!)

Phenomenal cover by Stuart Immonen and Wade vo Grawbadger! This is such a strong graphic image with the figure of Luke Cage bursting out towards us. Unusual in that it doesn't show the rest of the New Avengers, nor does it show the villains he's facing. Just a strong graphic image that makes the reader want to know more.

Seige was the major crossover for Marvel that brought an end to Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers, The Sentry, the Superpower registration act, and brought back Cap and the classic Avengers. Anyways, Luke Cage as part of the New Avengers since issue one is featured here showing his unbreakabe skin running through hell and back! He deserves appreciation for holding the team together after Civil War tore apart the heroes with those classic Immonen shadows enhanced by Von Grawbadger inks.

Hard charging Cage - nice depth and LOVE how the inks by von Grawbadger enhance the dramatic moment. Congrats!
