DescriptionOne of the biggest thrills of being a comic reader was approaching the racks every week and spotting the new cover of you favorite book. Team-up books always provided a bit more excitement . . . "Who would be paired with Batman, Spider-Man, or Superman?”This cover represents everything I loved about comics at the height of my young collecting days, and DC Comics Presents was one of my favorites. Pairing Superman with the likes of Deadman, Man-Bat, Swamp Thing, OMAC, and countless others produced some fantastic stories. But it was spotting those covers every month that I remember the most . . . with that great logo designed by Todd Klein. Another thing to love about this cover is that it introduced the first "Whatever Happened to...?" backup feature, which would appear in most issues for the next two years. Note too, this cover fills both the Ross Andru and Dick Giordano holes in my collection. As an aside, the interior pencils of this issue were done by Dick Dillin, who was penciling JLA 182 (also Sept. 1980) about the same time. I wrote a bit about Dillin in my post of one of his pages from JLA 183, the last before he passed. The guy was a machine. Thanks to the two fellow CAF members who helped me add this to my collection. DCCP 25 Synopsis: This issue is a continuation of the DCCP 13 storyline written by Paul Levitz, which had Jon Ross, son of Clark Kent’s childhood friend, Pete Ross, captured by the alien Nyrvin race. However, the Legion of Super-Heroes would stop the Man of Steel from rescuing the boy, telling him that he is destined to become a hero of the Millennium War, which brings long-standing peace of the future. Despite regrets, Superman leaves Jon with the Nrvynians. Pete, who reveals he knew Clark was Superman for years, goes insane with range over Superman’s failure to save Jon. In this issue Phantom Stranger finds that Pete’s range is part of a spell cast by Tala a demoness of Hell, on both Pete and Superman during what is Superman’s greatest failure. Stranger heads to hell to battle Tala to save Pete’s soul, while Superman heads back into deep space, finding a way to save Jon. Bringing Jon back to Earth breaks the spell. Social/Sharing |

Andru and Giordano were a great pairing! The soaring spirit of Superman and the dark spirit tone of Phantom Stranger split the cover, but are unified through their artistry. Wonderful nostalgia of early 80's DC while Superman ruled.
