DescriptionGrant Morrison and Howard Porter’s JLA was my Justice League. My DC. A total Marvel Zombie this was the book that made me care about the DCU.Howard Porter’s art more than held up against the marvel books I was reading at the time. Grant Morrison set out to bring the DC big seven back to the forefront. The early issues of JLA made you realize how great and cool these characters were. I love this page for the marquee Wonder Woman moment. This series was all about giving the big 7 their moments and this is a prime example for Wonder Woman. Social/Sharing |

Instead of Hawkman, they introduced Zauriel as a winged angel into the JLA mix in this early story arc. This page has the Wonder Woman image of the book with a Golden Age circle frame to remind you how far back of a legacy she has.

I HATED that Hawkman wasn't part of this JLA. And although I still resent it... Azreal was a great character that Morrison wrote into some great stories. Then DC let that character fade away. (Sigh). Great page with some awesome images out of a stellar run. Kudos & thanks for sharing.

Never realized Zuriel was meant to somewhat take Hawkmans place. But your guys comments led me to Wikipedia. Interesting stuff!
When Grant Morrison revived the JLA comic book in 1997, they expanded the roster to include over a dozen heroes. With frequent collaborator Mark Millar, they intended to create a new Hawkman with no links to the old characters. This new Hawkman, an Earth-bound angel of the "Eagle host" named Zauriel, was to be introduced into the JLA with issue #6 (June 1997). Morrison was denied permission to use the name "Hawkman" by DC editorial, which still considered it "radioactive", due to the complex post-Crisis continuity problems with the character.
In the Wizard JLA Special, Morrison made an appeal to the fanbase, "It's a good name and it seems a shame to let it go to waste. We're hoping that fans will figure 'For God's sake, let's just call him Hawkman and get him in the Justice League as Hawkman,' and the editors will relent. We're hoping to start a campaign." DC held firm, and the "Hawkman" name went unused for several more years.
