DescriptionAnother fun ‘90s get from Marvel Super-Heroes Vol 2 – a quarterly “80 page blockbuster!” that ran from ’90 to ’93 (15 issues) that had multiple original stories in each issue. Kinda like a beefed up Marvel Comics Presents. Issue 13 here was an all Iron Man issue. And for me…ALL about the Silver Centurion (SC) armor. And that’s it, lol. Didn’t know the story at all when picking it up. The SC armor has been my favorite since reading the original SC issues from Iron Man 200 on. I have one page from that run, from issue 217 by Bright/Layton (https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1520238), but I’ve wanted another piece or 2 featuring the armor. So there you go! And this page just had a great shot at the bottom, a SKTOOMing Tony, surrounded by a Kirby-ish black matter energy field. And got that nice little touch of zipatone on the chest plate :) The villain is kind of a throwaway dude named Midas. Check out his dialogue – “Load the gold! Load the gold!” That’s just TOO on the nose, right?! Fun stuff courtesy of 2 “the third” guys in James Fry III and Jim Sanders III! Social/Sharing |

Epic Iron Man shot at bottom, when you hear the name Fry you know it's gonna be 90s badassery!

Tons of action. I also really love the look of that second panel. Great inks on it.

James Fry III (Miller inspired?) high contrast work really made an impression on my 90s self, especially on Moon Knight. Fun page indeed.

That triangle chest plate threw me when it came out. Clunk the armor back up a bit, a little color change, and a triangle chest beam, and I was in, too. Loved the SC armor, and you know I dig that onomatopoeia, too. Heh. Nice find, Kahlil! KRAWHAM!

Super-cool '90s Marvel Super-Heroes page by James Fry and Jim Sanders III! Love action-packed pages like this one with outrageous sound effects like SHOOM and KRAWHAM and of course, SKTOOOM! That final panel with the Silver Centurion Iron Man is outstanding!

Love it, man! James Fry is an interesting artist. I couldn't name a run or character he's associated with. BUT, there was a fill-in issue of a Spider title he did that really made an impression on me. Completely different from anything McFarlane, Larsen, Bagley, Saviuk or Sal were doing and wholly original in execution. Thanks for the reminder to hunt it down and see if my memory of it is still right :)

Found it! Spectacular Spider-Man Isuues 213 and 214...a fill-in story featuring Typhoid Mary. Thanks for the inspiration to look it up again!

Glad I could be of service :) Cool that you found it, man. Those issues didn't ring a bell but when I looked them up they snapped back quick style. The people were super expressive. Was definitely different from what we were seeing in the Spidey books, as you say.
Also cool there's a few folks here commenting here about being Fry fans! Thanks, E, and all, for the adds!

Come on man, that villain has a the Midas touch! He's A-level at a minimum! I don't anything about this Silver Centurion character you keep talking about either, but I love me that Iron Man! Speaking of, I HATED that armor when it came out. The gold and red one that came just before is my "forever classic"! But I've learned to appreciate this one more over the ensuing years.

Ha ha, "to each his own", right?! I actually like that about comic OA. We all love the medium, but got our own likes and dislikes, lol. I dug the departure of the SC look, as it was still clearly IM, but subtly different in lotsa ways. Silver vs gold. Triangle chest plate vs circle. Extended shoulders. I think I remember reading somewhere a samurai look kinda influenced the design, and I can see that. Gald you've come around some, Ruben, and what's funny...I do have a nice page by Layton when he's back in the red and gold right after :)

When the lights go down in the underwater town
People are in for the crumbling
I jump into my art and I throw on my armor
You can’t beat my Centurion
Fry bought over Layton, singin' to my soul
There's people down there loadin' comics and the gold
Well my buddy Midas past he's a-workin' passin' gas
And he takes gold pieces for Sanders
Fry’s got rhythm in his hands as Jim’s brushin' on tin can
Brings old Marvel and black matter
Drawing all for Gearon, singin' to my soul
There's people out there loadin' comics and the gold

Ya gotta love a villain cursing out the hero as he greedily (and insanely) loads up his ship with far too much weight in gold. And his name is Midas! So great. And yeah, that last panel .. ooh la la! That is some Silver Centurion Iron Man awesomeness. The sense of motion and speed is palpable! Great grab!

I really thought James Fry should have been a more poular artist back in the day. He had a unique style and his storytelling skills were exceptional. This page is fantastic, and I love that last panel in particular!

If you are going to get an Iron Man page make sure you get one with something like the bottom panel on it. I have 2 DPS by Fry. One you commented on and one you might not have seen. Check it out if you want. Nice addition!!!

Yeah, not sure I saw that one - very nice, man! I missed James's work on Moon Knight but I know a contingent do look back fondly! And as F M stated above in his comment, you can see that Frank Miller influence...the chiaroscuro of the art :) Thanks for the add, and congrats on both the DPS's - you've had 'em awhile!

I haven't read this story, but I'm assuming that Tony Stark just can't stand the idea of someone being richer than him, so he's attacking Midas out of jealously. For shame, Iron Man. For shame.

Oh, the depths to which he'll go! I mean...Tony CAN be petty at times :) Got a good chuckle with that one, MM, thanks! "For shame" :)
