9x12 bristol board, pen and ink

It's Cyclops and his old young boss from the Champions, Ms. Marvel! Through a very convoluted time travel plot that resolves in a closed time loop, Kamala and Scott hung out as kids on a team called the Champions and are now totally bros in 616 comics. If you try to explain this plotline to someone, they will fully look at you with an expression that says "that is very stupid" and you know what? That's fair. But at the same time, it is also fun in an inscrutable way that only happens in comic books because they are an inherently ridiculous never-ending shared continuity that have gone on for literal decades.

This was part of Chris Samnee's March 2023 commission list. I adore Chris' Daredevil but he also seems to enjoy drawing some merry mutants so my first thought was to ask for Cyclops and Wolverine. However, the Samnees recently did a fun all-ages book called Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters so I asked for a team-up that was a little more lighthearted instead. Chris' work looks so effortless but it's so impressively technical. He's truly a master of his craft.

I unknowingly requested this a few months before any of that Hellfire Gala mutant retcon stuff happened, so if you hate that plotline then I apologize because I may have partly manifested it into the universe by accident. (I don't mind it myself!)

Even amongst all the Sentinel debris and the big one lurking in the back, Samnee keeps the two figures crisp and solidly featured. So great how the optic blast is offset by the solid background inks.

Fun piece! Samnee really has a swashbuckling throwback quality to his stuff while still being fresh. Great example. Congrats!
