Description

Mr. O'Malley was the fairy godfather to Barnaby Baxter, appearing in Crockett Johnson's groundbreaking Barnaby comic strip that ran in PM, the left-leaning newspaper. Crockett Johnson was a nom de plume for David Johnson Leisk, who is most well known for his "Harold and the Purple Crayon" series of children's books.

Barnaby originals, whether strips or specialty drawings, are quite rare. This is only the fourth such specialty drawing that I've ever seen. The piece is from the Earl Barton collection and is dated 1943 on the reverse.

Their relation explains the fairy wings here. The little touches of the crease on the cap and the stirrups to the shoes gives us a sense of the fashion and how well off the character was in those times.
