DescriptionMore non-comic comic art posts. First movies, then video games, now animation! Here, Lion-O, Lord of the Thundercats, by maestro Gerardo Zaffino!A lord, indeed. Just check out this “Old King Lion-O”. Channels Old King Thor, Old King Conan, etc. Badass. Takes me back to my younger days but as you can see Lion-O’s put on some years along with me! Big and burley and clearly been through it. See the scars, the beard, that no nonsense look. And man, I LOVE the hair. Or should I say mane?! Rendered beautifully by Zaff – what else would we expect?! Got the claw shield, a crackling Sword of Omens, the Thundercats symbol in the background, dramatic lighting...come on! Zaffino with his gritty line work as well as a little ziptone accenting. And big at a little wider than 11x17. One of those images that you’d hope we’d get a story from – I mean, we got the cover right here! And shout out to bud James S – shared the image and I contacted Inky Knuckles straight away. Thanks, man, as well as Inky and Gerardo. Definitely one of my favorite recent acquisitions! 2/6/24 UPDATE: This piece ended up #2 in voting in the Published/Unpublished Media artwork (Music, TV, Movie) category in CAF's Best of 2023! See link below for all of the great pieces in that category, as well as a screen shot of the top 5 in the additional images! https://www.comicartfans.com/bestofyrcatwinners.asp?boid=10&boyr=2023 Social/Sharing |

Well, I'm so tired of crying
But I'm out Lion-O again
No Lion-O again
Well, I'm so tired of trying
‘Cuz I've no Zaffino again
No Zaffino again
There ain't Sword of Omen
Just to call my Siegel friend
You know the Thundercats rattled
Out in the cartoon show
With the Lion-O
You know the best lines’ Zaffino
Out in the pain that shows
In the rain and snow
I didn't have the payroll
Can’t even a sketch to go
And my dear father left me
When I was quite young
When I was quite young
And my dear father left me
When I was quite young
When I was quite young
He said, "Lord have mercy,
Art is wicked son."

Thought of Roadhouse, one of the best bad flicks out there! And nice way to get Siegel in there :)
Thanks, Marcus, and all, for the comments!

Ha ha, thanks, Kenneth! As long as it's not one I'm eyeing ;)
And when I read that "NOW!", I thought "Thunder, thunder, thunder, Thundercats...NOWWWW!!" Ha!
Thanks for the add, man!

Wow that is gorgeous Kahlil! Definitely one of those magic pieces that invokes an entire story your mind with just a single image. Congrats!

Well, he was Conan so I can absolutely see it! Word up on the chiaroscuro. Reminds me of that line from Kill Bill: "You know, I've always like that word, gargantuan. I so rarely have the opportunity to use it in a sentence." Sub "chiaroscuro" for "gargantuan" :) Thanks, DF, glad you dig it!

Zaffino's art style is so impressive and that is on full display here. It's without questions the coolest Thundercats piece I have ever seen. One could probably even tape it up inside the new Super 7 lair.

Man oh man, I don't like being on the receiving end of that glare, and I'm just viewing an image. Imagine if you were facing the real deal in real life? Yikes. Really powerful piece, congrats!

Slapping a ton of black on a sheet of paper is one good way to get my attention. Of course it also doesn't hurt to end up with an incredibly powerful image at the same time. If this were a movie poster, I'd be standing in line already.

I'm right there with you, Eric, front of the line :) There is an element of "less is more" in terms of how much ink is on the board vs the actual "drawing". But that makes it even more impressive to me. Glad you dig it!

Goddamn this guy just melts eyes. The raw mixed with the finery, like we know he uses conditioner, but is it blowdried?

My eyes have just recently been restored man, whew. I'd ask "damn boy what kind of chemicals you put in there?!" He'd respond "I have put no chemicals. Only juices and berries." You know that one, right?!
Stoked to have this one. I'm glad he got the inspiration to do something a lil' different like this :) Thanks for the add, bud!

Zaffino is a modern master. One of my favorite modern artists for sure. This take on Lion-O gives him a more human appearance than I'm used to seeing and also makes him seem more badass and barbaric. Very cool.

Gorgeous, love the "King Conan" type of look for Lion-O, and the contrasts of this seriously pop. Very cool man.

Another spectacular Zaffino pinup. He never disappoints. There just isn't anyone doing it like him right now. Congrats!

Having seen this in real life I know that this scan does not do the piece justice. Great pick up! #WhereIsSnarf?

Ha ha, I wonder how Snarf's aged. That "snarf snarf" delivered a little more throaty, maybe?! And yeah, man, glad I was able to share this one with you. And I agree - solid scan here but doesn't hold a candle to the in-person view and subsequent inspection! Thanks, E!

He gave Lion-O a grown up look. I'd definitely check out a series catching up with what the Thundercats have been up to all of these years. Wonderful piece. Congrats!

Everything Zaffino touches turns to gold, and he touched this with a 50 lb sledge hammer. Love the textures, composition, lighting, and especially the attitude

Fierce! And I like the texture on the gauntlet as well as the transition of lighting on his figure. So well done.
