Description

Charles Flanders original art from The Lone Ranger strip on January 13, 1963 in india ink on heavyweight paper, art image is a massive 16.75" x 24.75" on a 18.5" x 26.5" sheet.

This is the original art from artist Charles Flanders (no relation) for the Sunday comic strip published on Jan 13, 1963. It features the Lone Ranger and Tonto in a suspenseful, action-oriented episode.

The storyline is based on the real-life incident of the Ghost Dance religion that spread among the Laokta Sioux people in 1890 and increased their resistance to encroachment on their lands by gold seekers and settlers after the US government unilaterally changed the terms of a treaty. There was a belief among some warriors who engaged in the Ghost Dance that wearing a special Ghost Shirt into battle would make a warrior invulnerable to bullets. These historical elements are incorporated into this episode.

Write Frank Striker and Artist Ed Kressy created The Lone Ranger comic strip, based on Striker's popular radio program, in 1938; Flanders took over drawing the strip in 1939 and continued it for many years. The original is signed "Charles Flanders" by the artist in the middle panel of the bottom row. Wrather Corporation copyright label appears in the fourth panel of the second row.

There's a nice rhythm to the pacing here in this Sunday with the action topper, the regroup, and then the new approach that builds tension in the cliffhanger.
