DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #158, drawn by regular contributor Stephen Baskerville, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case the Mike Zeck / Tom Palmer cover to X-Men Classics #1 (which reprinted the Tnhomas/Adams Sentinels storyline).Title: "Fall Of The Samuroids!" Story: A few days before Christmas, and Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Steel, Green Arrow and Starman have been joined by Miss America and Hawkgirl, both of whom had been on the West Coast supporting the government's drive to get more women into war work. After a day working on the damamged remains of the Samuroid (destroyed by a concerted attack in the last issue) Starman believes that he can now use his gravity rod to locate the other giant robots seen defeating - and abducting - Superman, Batman and Robin, and Judomaster. The heroes fly off, following Starman's lead, but are not convinced that his scheme is working when his path takes them off the coast and out over the Pacific Ocean... Meanwhile, aboard the giant Japanese submarine which houses the Samuroids, Baron Blitzkrieg (working with his Japanese allies) is overseeing work to strengthen the Samuroid's armour, having witnessed the effects of the attack by the assembled heroes and realised that more protection is needed if the robots are to withstand such a battle in future. What Blitzkreig and the villains aren't aware of, however, is that by improving the armour, they are also increasing the amount of shielding around the Samuroid's power plants - which has the side-effect of cutting off the kryptonite radiation from the mysterious meteor fragments which power them - and thereby slowly letting Superman regain his strength! Starman's gravity rod has led the group of All-Stars to a non-descript spot several miles off the California coast and, while Green Arrow expresses concern that something must be wrong, Starman uses his amazing invention to reach below the waves, and seize submarine he can detect! Gradually the craft is dragged to the surface, until it's close enough for Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel to grab it, and carry it to a nearby small rocky island, where they deposit it. The heroes then concentrate their assault on the beached sub, breaking into it, only to be confronted by over a dozen Samuroids, who launch an attack! Meanwhile, within the sub, Superman has recovered enough of his strength to allow him to break out of the tube he'd been held captive in, and turns his attention to freeing other imprisoned heroes, including Captain Marvel Junior, Wonder Woman, Judomaster, Neptune Perkins and Tsunami. Before he can do so, however, another Samuroid attempts to stop him - but a shout from Hawkgirl and Miss America (who have evaded the giant robots outside and entered the stranded sub) alerts the Man Of Steel to the attack! Although the Samuroid grabs Superman, the heat of his x-ray vision is sufficient to cripple the robot, and Hawkgirl flies Miss America to safety as the automaton crashes down! The three heroes then free their captive comrades, and join the fight outside - and the combined might of the All-Stars is enough to defeat and destroy the army of Samuroids, while some of the lesser-powered heroes round up the Japanese sailors who have been manning the sub. In the confusion, however, Baron Blitzkreig decides not to join the battle, but flies off towards the mainland. As Batman questions the All-Stars' captives, one of the Japanese prisoners lets slip that Baron Blitzkreig had been aboard the sub, and Commander Steel vows to finally defeat him! Great layout to use as that comic came out at around the same time All Star Squadron was on the newsstands. The reprint aspect also bridges time periods much like this reimagination.
