DescriptionTo follow up on the more somber mood of the yesterdays daily, here is a historically important and poignant one. This is the daily after the death and burial of Raven Sherman. I have a daily from just before this where she lays dying and Terry and Dude look on helplessly unable to saver her after her injuries in the accident. Very powerful stuff and the kind of thing that lead to thousands of upset readers and even death threats to Caniff. This was a first in a comic strip, killing off one of the main characters.Social/Sharing |

While I appreciate the historic nature of an important character death back in this era, I'm actually even more taken aback at the usage of the term "dude" in the dialogue, being used in the same context it is used today! Wow. I have never until now ever seen, read or heard anyone use the term "dude" this way anywhere remotely close to as far back as 1941!

I heard that her biggest fan Annie Wilkes couldn't stand it anymore and went as far as attempting to kidnap Caniff to rewrite the outcome so Raven could live.

WOW! Incredible daily! There exists alot of documentation surrounding the death of Raven Sherman and the backlash that Caniff dealt with, but little about the grace and dignity in the way that he treated the tragedy of this sequence, and respect for the character. Often cited as one of...OR the most important run in the history of the medium...and rightfully so.
