Description

My good friend Hector Medina sent me a link to this opportunity shortly before OAX: a chance to get a sketch from Nick Pitarra in his latest passion project. Neither Hector nor I had read the book yet, but we were immediately taken with the art and figured this would be the perfect opportunity to get both accomplished. We quickly went to searching the internet for a character to request. Hector went with the villain, Lord Fang, while I almost requested Jon himself, but then I stumbled upon an interview with Nick, where he mentioned the narrator of the story, a 12 year old girl named Basil Toymaker. My own daughter is around this and I immediately felt a connection to the character.

On Saturday at OAX, we stopped by Nick’s table and he generously let Hector choose between two Lord Fang sketches he had done. My piece would have to wait. Nick was presently surprised with my request and wanted to take his time with it. Hector and I enjoyed the show and he was going to do some reading in the hotel later, only to realize this was a true artist’s edition: all art and no words!

The next day I stopped by to pick up my book from Nick. He opened it up to this sketch and I was flabbergasted. I didn’t expect the connection I felt to this character and my own daughter to hit me so hard. I thanked Nick profusely and he again asked if we’d had the opportunity to read the book. I told him no and that Hector and I were wondering if there was anywhere online we might be able to read it while flipping through the art. Nick walked over to his table and immediately handed me two copies of the regular edition of the book for us to read. I was stunned by his kindness and generosity. Just a wonderful human being and fellow Girl Dad.
