DescriptionA complete 9 pg story titled "Duet" published in Epic Illustrated #27 illustrated by an artist named Neal McPheeters and written by Jan Strnad. I attached all the rest of the pages under additional images and they were done on oversized art board...they are HUGE.I love these simple little stories...now sit down here next to the fire and I'll tell the tale of "The Duet". One day aliens came to our Earth and told us they are taking over. We launched everything at them including nuclear weapons that did nothing but blow up pieces of our own planet. The aliens did threaten to blow up Venus to make us submit, but when we said how much we loved Venus they blew up Mars instead. After the destruction here on Earth, all of which we did ourselves, we finally gave in. They took over but mostly left us as we were. Same things aired on TV, we had to go to our jobs and life was mostly the same. The aliens did however make us hand over all our nukes and destroyed them. I'm just simply a street musician and one day I was walking through the subway where I saw one of those aliens, who without their flying ships were really quite frail, being beaten to a pulp by a few civilians. I don't know why I approached, but I did, and once all the hooligans ran off I helped the alien sit up, as that seemed to be what he wanted to do. He was weak and talking a bit feverish. I could barely hear him but I moved in close and he told me about himself...he didn't want to be here...he was drafted to be here...they just wanted to save us from ourselves...back home he was a musician...he was just like me...I pulled out my Harp and I saw him smile...then he pulled out an instrument that looks a bit like a flute and I began to play for him...I chose to play "Jesu, joy of man's desiring" by Bach and the alien joined right in...it was beautiful the way he played. We must have played together 10 minutes...maybe thirty...I lost track of time until I finally realized I was playing alone. I looked over to see the alien dead...and I was sad to see him go. Sometime later the aliens did leave...kinda gave up on us...but I am glad they came and took away our nukes...now I find myself drafted to go fight Russia over some oil rights. I don't know why we have to do it. I've got nothing against any Russian. Perhaps one day late at night I may run across some Russian with a balalaika or something...perhaps he'll also want to play a duet... THE END A mediocre summary but that's the gist of this nice little story on some artist souls from two different worlds caught in the whirl winds of dangerous worlds. Social/Sharing |

This brought the high quality art to the US that was only seen in foreign magazines back in the 80's. The painted illustrative comics were pushing boundaries and opening up the genre to more experimentation for complex storytellng. Gorgeous fantasy art with those deep colors on the illustration board.
