DescriptionNow I don't go gaga for just any page, but I tell you, I did for this one! Definitely in the "Grail" category.IMHO, the best, if not one of the best one of the best Conan stories. This page introduces the characters to one of their protagonist (Thak), and takes the reader through all sorts of emotions, intrigue, terror, pathos, along with the incredible storytelling, each panel a masterwork and delight. It makes me think about drawing inferences to the Frankenstein juxtaposition scenario where Nabonidus and Thak are alter-egos. Nabonidus wants to project power and invincibility, and Thak is trying to assert a personal evolution (Bestial Ambitions!) cloaking himself figuratively and literally in Nabonidus' wardrobe and privileges, including a flawed humanity. Thak's rendering puts enough humanity in him to make him look truly psychotic.

I agree with you, this is one of the very best Conan stories (also one of the best short stories), and this page is fantastic. Barry isn't quite in full form yet, but his artwork is already well developed here. It's amazing to realize that he started in the industry at age 19 and he was 21 when he did this. What a talent.
