Description

Latest - and last - "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #160, drawn by long-time contributor Ian Richardson, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case the George Perez cover to Legion Of Super-Heroes #280.

Title: "All Things Must Pass..."

Story: New Year's Eve, 1942 - and the members of the All-Star Squadron assemble to reflect on the events of the past year and to celebrate the reconstruction and re-opening of their headquarters, the Perisphere. The last twelve months have seen triumph - the defeat of some of their arch-foes, including the Ultra-Humanite, Baron Blitzkrieg, the Brain Wave, and many others - and tragedy, including the deaths of the Red Bee, TNT and Lando, Man Of Magic. With the tide of war slowly turning in favour of the Allies, it seems likely that more triumphs - and inevitably, more tragedies - will lie ahead in the coming months and years, but for now, the coming year of 1943 seems full of promise.

As more of the team's members gather, Robotman arrives. His attempts to reconstruct their robot butler, Gernsback, have proved fruitless, but while he continues to use components from Gernsback's destroyed body to create a new guard (in the form of a robotic dog) for their headquarters, he's asked another hero to step in on at least a temporary basis to oversee the smooth functioning of the Perisphere - "Ma" Hunkel, The Red Tornado, who the Squadron welcomes to membership.

As dusk falls, the four co-chairs (Hawkman, Liberty Belle, Uncle Sam and Spy Smasher) ask the team to once again vow to stand united until the war is over and the Axis forces are defeated, and with one voice the All-Star Squadron echo their words...

... unaware that, across the vast gulfs of space and time, as a result of the events of Zero Hour, even their island universe has been affected, and certain members of their team have been wiped from existence. This earth no longer has a Last Son Of Krypton; no Gotham Guardian or Boy Wonder; no King Of The Seven Seas; no Emerald Archer or Boy Bowman; no World's Mightiest Mortal or his fellow members of the Marvel Family in the skies above Fawcett City. But whatever their membership, the Squadron remains the greatest super-team in history, standing firm against the forces of evil --- and their resolve remains unchecked!

And that's it, folks. After 93 issues, 8 Annuals and one Special, over more than six years (and more money than I care to think about), the Continuation Project draws to a close. I decided to stop here because, at 102 issues, I've matched the number of issues Roy Thomas produced of the All-Star Squadron and Young All-Stars combined (and yes, nitpickers, I know he also wrote the preview story in JLA #193, a short Squadron story in All-Star Comics 80 Page Giant #1, and co-plotted three issues of the JLA in which the Squadron appeared - sue me), and it seemed like an appropriate place to stop.

While I've no current plans to do a follow-up, if I ever do decide to do so, it'll be on the basis above - no Superman, Batman and Robin, Green Arrow and Speedy, Aquaman or Marvel Family, and (probably) using the Queen Hippolyta version of Wonder Woman.

Hope you've enjoyed this century-plus of issues!

A great one to homage!  Those smaller figures done in scale are super tight and does Perez justice!
