DescriptionAs mentioned in my descriptions for the Duke page I own, the shared world of Image/Skybound’s Energon Universe is the most fun I am currently having in comics. I love the slow build of this connected universe for the Transformers & GI Joe properties. They are successfully engaging both long time & brand new fans of the properties.I knew I wanted at least one example from Daniel Warren Johnson’s time as the series artist, a gig that ended with issue 6 (he will stay on as the writer & is doing covers). As we all know Felix drops are…competitive. My approach was to pick a page that I thought wouldn’t break the bank but also features both humans & at least one bot. For the drop of issue three, I quickly zeroed in on this page. It has the signature elements of a great DWJ page (action, speed lines, hand drawn sound effects and engaging perspectives) along with two core human characters in Carly & Sparky along with the attacking Laserbeak, one of Soundwave’s pets. It’s a great, dialogue light, intense page that has so much to take in and enjoy. I love that it is a more up close and personal encounter between humans & a Decepticon & you can really feel that action in the flow of the page. There is a clear reason DWJ has garnered the attention & following that he has! Just some really great comics with action & heart! What’s not to love there? Social/Sharing |

Congrats on the pickup! I felt exactly as you did on the eve of that Felix drop, haha.

Thanks so much! Yeah, sometimes the strategy pays off, but really I feel like it all just comes down to luck no matter what the "strategy" was! 😂

For me, Laserbeak's appearance is what makes the entire page feel like it is balls to the wall, screaming action! The speed at which everything is happening makes me feel just like I do when I'm watching a very dramatic high speed sequence in a film. You're holding your breath without even realizing it and your heart's up in your throat!

It's just laid out perfectly, "camera" angles picked perfectly! I love some smaller details like how Sparky's body is folding over. Great choice of body positioning to convey the force & speed at which he is we tossed! It's one that is just exciting to look at, the intensity is undeniable & impossible to not feel the tension, speed & fear!

Very important for DWJ to ground the bot madness with the human interactions and what danger they impose as the stakes are on a personal and worldwide scale. Signature sytle blending fantastical action and war comics with the energy of manga speedlines and onomatopoeia!

Another total kick ass example from this series. Laserbeak is so menacing on this page, I can feel the adrenaline pumping from the characters. The action, the speed, the sound effects! Just sooooo good!

Agreed, the trademark palpable DWJ action is all here. Just gets the blood pumping! Love that pitting Laserbeak against our human heroes allows the scale to loom large when we typically view Laserbeak as small when with other bots!

I was slacking & never replied! I always try to respond! Not that you were holding your breath but still! Thanks so much! I felt like this was one that showcased his talents quite well with some intense & intimate action without blowing up my art budget too much!

Addressing some loose ends & responding to old comments! Sorry for the delay! Thanks for the kind words! This one is intense! Love how Laserbeak's head dominates in that panel with Carly in full on horror movie scramble panic pose!
