DescriptionIn 2019 new client Vic Noda commissioned me to take 10 Tick blank sketch covers that had the barest of layout outlines and asked me to elaborate, redraw and do finishing inks on them for a 2 part fight sequence. This time Vic returns with 2 more pieces that were very loose sketches Gerhardt (who's known as Dave Sim's Cerebus background artist) on separate sheets or board and asked me to lightbox them to the blank covers and then finish them. The attached drawings are how they were originally drawn and Vic flipped them and in Photoshop showed me suggested placement on the covers. I made adjustments on that when light boxing. He asked for some edits after I started like to add a cigar held by the Roach being dropped when Tick grabs him. He also asked that I add the additional copy "The Roach vs" in that spot and to design the Roach's font to match the Cerebus one, the series where Roach originated at. And lastly to add in razor stubble which after rendering the Roach's face already on the second option with the transitional lighting ink lines ultimately made his face a grey area with little contrast (where I to redo that I would adjust it to pop out better with clarity). I bulked up the Tick from what was there at first and other enhancements. The first cover wasn't too bad with the usual challenges of erasing off the pencils not being ideal and the spine always getting in the way. But it was the second wraparound that was a bitch because it had a glossy surface. Erasing pencils was harder, It didn't take ink well and easily smudged/smeared while working on it. So that version is less polished in ink for me. And it didn't help that once I started doing corrections/cleanup that I'd accidentally picked up Titanium white OIL paint instead of acrylic for the first time ever and couldn't figure out why it wasn't drying well and making the experience much harder until I realized it and soon got some acrylic to finish it up. I used Kuretake brush markers, Pitt brush markers, Sakura micronmarkers, Pentel correction pen and some dot zip on the second version. So these were my 11th & 12th Tick & Vic Noda commissions and only the 2 times I have handled the Roach. They were completed March 24, 2024.Social/Sharing |
