Description

This is an 11-page golf story that ran in pages 11 to 22 of Archie At Riverdale High #65. It features Reggie Mantle and Chuck Clayton battling for captaincy of the golf team. This is cover-dated August 1979 which is pretty significant, which demonstrates that perhaps unwittingly - Archie Comics was ahead of its time. This story was also featured in the cover of the issue.

This was an era when African-Americans were not yet household names in golf. It was only 4 years removed from when The Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia had its first African American participant in Lee Elder. This story was also published just months before the great Calvin Peete earned his first of twelve PGA Tour victories to make him the winningest African-American player ever on the tour until a certain Tiger Woods came along.

Yet, this story is 11-pages making it the longest golf-centric story in Archie Comics history. It also featured an African-American - Chuck Clayton - taking captaincy of the Riverdale High Golf Team. This story was before Calvin Peete, and obviously well before Tiger Woods who opened the floodgates to the exponential growth of golf across all regions and races. Actually this story was published 3 years after Tiger was born.

Pretty significant for an Archie book. It was overdue and about time though as there was a bunch of lawyer talk about private clubs having the right to exclude people from joining. This is way after all the other major sports had integrated.
