A musical comedy by E.E.S. Huntington and music by Howard Webster. Published by Chas. K. Harris, Chicago. - Harry Conway (Bud) Fisher (1885-1954) was an American cartoonist who created Mutt and Jeff. It is considered to be the first successful long running comic strip of panels in a horizontal format (Clair Briggs had a short lived strip in the same format first.) Fisher's lasted over 75 years. There were many ghost writers and after 1926 Fisher just signed his name and collected the checks. Al Smith took over in 1932 and drew until 1980 when he died. Then George Breisacier continued until 1983.
A. Mutt, the comicstrip that became better known by it's later title, Mutt and Jeff debuted on November 15,1907 on the sport pages of the San Francisco Chronicle. This strip focused on Mutt until Jeff appeared on March 27,1908. Augustus Mutt is a tall, dimwitted racetrack character--a fanatic horse-race gambler motivated by greed.Jeff is a half-pint inmate from an insane asylum who shares his passion for horseracing. Jeff was short, bald as a billiard ball and wore mutton chop sideburns. He usually wears a top hat and suit wih wing collar. Together they focus on Mutt's outlandish, get-rich-quick schemes. They frequently interact with celebrities, including sports figures, actors, and politicians. - Mutt and Jeff also appeared in comic books by All-American Publications, DC Comics. Dell Comics, and Harvey Comics.Not to mention they graced the front cover of FAMOUS FUNNIES #1, the first modern format comic book. We also find past appearences in stage shows, on sheet music,in reprints, in live action shorts, and over 300 animation shorts. - In popular culture any pair of individuals of different sizes has come to be known as a Mutt and Jeff.
