DescriptionCoipel’s artistic evolution reached a new level once he started inking his own work and this was on full display during his run on Unworthy Thor. This DPS from the final issue was a terrific moment as Odinson (unworthy for a few years now) hopes to finally reclaim his past as this montage of memories flashes in his mind. As beautiful as this sequence is in the book, I wasn’t prepared for how incredible the raw inked art is.I’ve loved every iteration of Olivier’s work - from his animation influences during his early run on Legion to the current watercolor cover work he does so well today. He’s one of the modern greats and it’s easy to spot his influence on a whole new generation of current artists. His rendering alone can be seen in all manner of up and comers today. Thanks, Pat L for parting with this piece! Social/Sharing |

Oooh, I'm jelly. IMO one of Coipel's best images ever and that's of course saying something. Lotsa Thor history here (including a personal favorite time with the Simonson armor!) and rendered as only Coipel can render. I loved this miniseries for the art and this example is right at the top. Whew. Huge congrats, my friend!

Brilliant pickup! Thor really has a presence here and love the Weeks style hulk too! Huge congrats. Can't imagine a better Coipel example.

This piece HAS TO be one of the, if not THE greatest Thor pieces Coipel has ever created. Kudos!

At the risk of being accused of throwing that word around, this has to be a grail for many a collector. Congrats on this beauty.

I completely agree with your statements: his own influences, on others, his levelling up on that particular series.
(This is also where I find he decided that backgrounds were a thing of the past for him and inks could nicely fill the pages up where needed ^^)

100% about the backgrounds! Ink wash and dry brush became a huge part of his replacement arsenal.

Odin's beard!!! WOW, Eranga - this is next level's next level! An absolute pinnacle Coipel piece that (you nailed it) positively sings, thanks to Olivier's inking and washes. Love the original Avengers lineup (with Wasp popping out, way in front), and I love how Olivier illustrates the different belt buckles Thor has borne over the years. :) And as much as this is (unquestionably) a museum-Worthy piece, let's not lose sight of the fact that there's some good storytelling here, too, as that last subtle panel (hidden in some lovely shadows in that bottom right corner) portends of something rumbling in the distance (and coming closer)... Fantastic job locking this one down, E! This magic lightning can't possibly strike twice!
